CHEMAWA VS MCKAY
Boy’s and girl’s varsity basketball
teams and the Chemawa wrestling team
went by charter bus on Dec. 8 to Sherman
Indian School at Riverside, California
to meet their team s. Inter-BIA Boarding
School competion, friendly but Fierce,
was the aim of the gam es. The teams
enjoyed the experience gained in com
peting and getting to know athletes in
another BIA school. The groups also
toured the school and, on the way
home spent a day at Disneyland. The
three team s were accompanied by their
coaches -- Don Bailey, Larry Byers, Ed
John, Jack Quincy, and Dennis Shields.
Our basket ball boy’s team topped
Riverside, and Chemawa wrestlers
brought home the mat honors.
The Chemawa Braves’ 9th grade
basketball team was defeated Jan. 23,
1981 by the McKay 9th grade basketball
team by a score of 60-45 on their home
court. Wilfred Lawrence, with 18 points
was the high man for Chemawa.
The coach for the Braves is Larry Byers
He has led the team undefeated until
now. The Braves had approximately
75 supporters.
1 need time alone to read and to study
schoolwork, but I never get it because
someone is always coming into my room.
I can’t study when someone is talking
loud or making noise. Also, I like to be
alone so I can take a nap once in a while.
On our way home to Browning,
M ontana, for Christmas vacation we got
into a bus wreck. It was so sudden. We
were all asleep when the bus stopped
short and you could fell the bus sliding.
Everyone jumped up and looked around
The bus hit a car that was parked along
side the road. The bus then spun around
and hit the side of the hill. It was turned
sideways so that no car could pass on
either side. So the bus driver was getting
all the boys to get off the second bus
and try to push the crosswise one out of
the way. Just when they were going to
push it out of the way, a semi-truck
came and hit the bus from the other
side.
Fortunately, all the students
got out of the way. But the bus driver
got hit and his leg was broken.
The boys Varsity Basketball team
played an exciting game against Santiam
on home court February 3rd. The final
score was Chemawa 60, Santiam 48.
Coach Ed John, said this win moves
Chemawa closer to making the district
play-offs.
The leading scorers were Alden
Kickingwomen with 18, Arthur “ Coot
Fred with 13, Leonard Lawrence with 11,
and Roger Kemp with 10.

TOURNAMENT
Contenders in the Chemawa W restling
Tournam ent, held here on January 17th,
were Glendale, McKay Hi (Salem),
and Alsea. The presence of 100 Che
mawa fans, the fact that Chemawa
w restlers kept the slate clean in sports
m anship. plus a number of wins, all
contributed to a strong showing for
Chemawa.
High scorers were: Raymond Gensaw,
117 lbs, a first place trophy; Fernandez
Sandoval, 108 lbs, a first; Sammy Butter
fly, 1301bs, and Tom Licht, heavy weight,
second place trophies.
Team-wise,
Chemawa stood in third place.
Mr. Simpson and Don Bailey are
wrestling coaches.
