Divided, We Fall
Chemawa Indian School’s enroll
ment has dropped from 699 in 1971-
1972 to 250. We are in danger of
being closed down because of the
lack of students. In this article we
are asking for help.
Chemawa is the oldest contin
uously running boarding school in
the United States. We have edu
cated thousands of young Native
Americans here, and we can keep on
educating them with your help.
There is nc w a possibility of,
another reduction in forces. This %
time, we would lose 53 staff mem
bers. - It does not seem likely that I
Chemawa can run very well with
only 63 staff members left on cam- |
pus.
Don’t think that we are not doing 1
anything about it. Now the Che
mawa students are constructing a
poster to send to all the reservations ’
in the Northwest to encourage Indian 2
youth to come here. When we go
home we try to encourage our friends
and relatives to join us.
If Chemawa is too stay open, we
we need more students.

Petitions Circulated
Student Council is circulating
petitions.
One of the petitions is to get sup-
port from the students to help keep
our school open. Delphinia Pevo
and E lsie Mooney are getting sig-
natures.
The other one is 4 petitioning

at night. If you haven’t signed the
one, get hold of Vicki Penn.
If enough students support these
petitions, Student Council hopes
that it will ¿id in keeping Chemawa
open and possibly the Clinic will
return to its usual hours.
