Four Wrestlers Place at District
Seven teams took part in the Cap
ital Conference Wrestling Tournament
at Cascade on February
23—24.
Chemawa finished 5th with a total of
31 points.
Henry Alexie took second place in
the 106-pound division. He is the
first Chemawa wrestler to go to State
since wrestling was reintroduced here
two years ago. The first and second-
place finishers in each weight class
earn a trip to the State Champion
ships.
Gary Abrahamson finished 3rd at
168 pounds. Jim Abrahamson finished

The Chemawa junior varsity basket
ball team slaughtered Gervais 89—42
in their last game on March 2. Frank
Bitonti and Don Abrahamson led the
scoring with 24 and 23 points.
The jayvees’ record for the year
was 6 wins and 13 losses. Some of
« the losses were to varsity teams

other schools. Last year their record
was 0—21.
Mr. Ed John, Their coach, said
“ The boys are good shots,aggressive
and they play a good game.”
This year’s jayvee team was
made up of James Ahyakak, Alvin
Penny, Allen Kaleak, Don Abra
hamson, Bino deLeon, Frank Bi
tonti, Owens Yahtin, Andrew To-
yak, Fred Hill, Eddie Biederman,
Max Adams, Lloyd Vincent and
Francis Devereaux.
third at 178 and Larry Edwards also
finished third at heavyweight.
This was the last wrestling match
for the Year. Next year Coach Lawver
hopes to have “ stud” wrestlers, he
said. The whole team will return
next fall, so Chemawa should have a
better team than this year.
Frosh End Season
The freshman basketball team
ended their season with 5 wins and
10 losses, losing their last game to '
Woodburn.
The Coach, Mr. Nathan Doan said
“ This is about the best team
Chemawa has. They are the only
team besides the girls, to beat Cas
cade.”
The leading scorers were Tom
Tillequots and Francis Devereaux.
They are among the top ten fresh
men in the state in scoring, averag
ing nearly 20 points a game. Isaac
Jack was the leading rebounder for
the season.
The players on the team are Tom
Tillequots,
Francis Devereaux,
Lavern Andrews, Robert Francis,
Emery Hall, Isaac Jack, Jack Okto-
llik,Grant Smith, Kirby Thomas, and
Johnson Booth. The managers are
Raleigh Kowunna and Ron Bourgean.
Coach Doan said the best pros
pects for varsity next year would
probably be Tom Tillequots,Francis
Devereaux, Lavern Andrews, and
Emery Hall.
Chemawa held its 1st Valentine
Road Race. All students and staff
were invited to participate.
Such events as the girls 114 mile
race took place. The adults also
ran in this race. The boys race was
iVi miles. There were individual
runners too and an award for the
runner who came closest to his pre
dicted time. There were also teams
which consisted of four runners. No
two varsity runners could be on the
same team.
The individual winner for the boys
race was Arthur Ambrose with the
time of 12:48. The girls individual
winner was Kathy Andrews, running
the mile and a quarter in 7:17. Mr.
Ed John, the boys jv basketball
coach, was the adult winner in the
mile and a quarter with a time of
6:09.
For the boys team race Jake’s
Jokers came in 1st with 54 points.
The runners were Jacob Merculief,
David Enoch, Tom Brown and John
Henry.
The winning girls team was Barb
ie’s Babies with 27 points. Runners
were Barbara Westcoast, Josephine
Ayunerak, Tat Andrew and Smitty
Smiskin.
The winner for coming closest to
his predicted time was Tom Brown.
He predicted he’d run the 2Vi mile
race in 15:00 and he ran it in 14:58,
two seconds off what he predicted.
G irls Clobber Cascade
For Conference T itle
The girls varsity basketball team
beat Cascade 47—36 in a playoff
March 7 at Regis to win the Capital
Conference title. ' This is the third
straight year Chemawa has won this
title. Arlene Senator was high scorer
for Chemawa with 13 points.
The girls finished their regular
season with a record of 13—2. The
two losses were to Cascade and
McMinnville in early-season games.
Chemawa later beat both teams in
rematches.
The jayvees finished
with a record of 9 wins and 4 losses.
This will be the last year of bask
etball for four varsity players—Susie
Marchand, Arlene Senator, Ramona
Smiskin and Phyllis Ward. This was
Susie’s 4th year on the varsity.
Lorena Thompson and Loretta Pen
ny, along with Arlene and Susie, were
leading scorers for the team.
