THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN
B ooriiaf School To Congress?
Early last month in Anchorage,
the Democratic Party delegates
chose Emil Notti over Peggy Begich
and Chancy Croft to run against Re
publican candidate Don Young in the
up coming March 6 special election.
The election is being held because
of the tragic death of Congressman
Nick Begich, whose plane was lost
last October in Alaska.
The significant thing about the
Democratic candidate Notti is that
he is an Athabaskan Indian. If he
does make it in, he will be the first
Alaskan Native in the United States
House of Representatives.
Emil, just like us, went to a board
ing school. To me, he is a bright
light for us to follow, along with
many other native leaders. He has
shown that a Native can make it in
the world, not by sitting around and
griping about the B.I.A. and so forth
but by getting an education and doing
something about it.
Even though its early in the race,
we are still proud of Emil for setting
a good example, for in the many
years to come, we must take our lea
ders’ places and not lose what they
have worked so hard for.
S tu den t H ealth Careers
The Student Health Careers Pro
gram is here at Chemawa. Interested
students should contact their Acad
emic Advises Mr. Don Williams, Mr.
Jesse Matt or Mr. John Heinz, Service
Unit Director at the Student Health
Center.
Here is what the booklet “ To The
First Americans” has to say about
The Student Health Careers.
“ The Student Health Center Care
ers program is administered by scho
ol officials. However, it is present
ed through the health professionals
represented at the Health Center.
This is an in-Health Center activity
accomplished through a “ pairing”
of the health professional and stu
dent.
Planning includes one or more stu
dent positions for each professional
position. It is hoped that during
second semester more Health Careers
students can go on field trips to
local hospitals, clinics, laboratories,
and so forth.”

important than adding an extra
