Twenty-two boys have turned out
for the Chemawa wrestling team this
year, but Coach Ben Lawver still
needs more boys between 123 and
141 pounds. This is a building year
for the team, with not a single senior
on the squad.
This year the wrestlers are easy to
spot. O.S.A.A. regulations prohibit
long hair on wrestlers, so the entire
team has been trimmed of several
pounds of hair.
Despite the lack of seniors, Coach
Lawver does have some experienced
wrestlers returning. Among them are
Henry Alexie, 106-pound sophomore
(14-2 last year), Gary Abrahamson,
167-pound junior (10-3 last year) and
Dave Titus, 123-pound junior (7-4
last year).
The Braves edged Jefferson 33-
32 in their opening meet and then
entered the 8-team Clatskanie tour
nament on Dec. 28. Jim Abrahamson
took 2nd at 178 pounds.
Gary
Abrahamson finished 3rd at 178 and
Billie Wassillie 4th at 98.

Braves Play 3 Tourneys at Once
Chemawa basketball had one of
its busiest weekends in the school’s
history December 8 & 9 when the
Braves played in three different in
vitational tournaments simultaneous
ly.
A scheduling mixup resulted in
the varsity playing in the Stewart,
Nevada Invitational as planned, the
junior varsity representing the
school at the Scio Tournament and a
third team going to the MacLaren
Tournament. The result was seven
games in two days, of which the
Braves won two.
The varsity whipped Owyhee High
of Nevada 65—35 in the opening
round of the Stewart Tourney. Lloyd
Davis was high for the Braves with
18 points, followed by David James
with 13
Stewart handled Chemawa 80—59
in the finals. The game was even
at the half, but a Stewart press broke
it wide open in the third quarter.
Lloyd Davis with 32 was the only
Brave scoring in double figures.
The jayvees dropped both their
games at Scio, the first one by a
«core of 61—46 to Detroit. Delbert
Okbaok and Bino Deleon led Che-
mawa’s scoring with 13 each. In
the consolation round the Braves
lost to Falls City 69—53. Frank
Bitonti scored 21 for Chemawa,while
Okbaok added 14 and Deleon 10.
Center Alvin Penny was Chemawa’s
top rebounder in both games.
Despite the losses, Coach Ed
John was pleased. “ They did a
good job playing against varsity
teams that have been playing togeth
er for years,” he said.
A third Chemawa team won one
game in three tries at the MacLaren
Tournament. The “ extra” Braves
finished sixth by beating Columbia
Christian of Portland 81—65. Dan
Davis dropped in 31 points, a single
game high for the tournament, and
was helped by Nels Martin with 18
and Stan Johnson with 11.

December brings basketball back
to Chemawa, and this year it looks
like a good season.
The 72-73
Braves look a lot bigger and stronger
than last year’s team, which was
dwarfed by almost every opponent
it played.
Coach Lippy got his first look at
the team under game conditions at
the jamboree in Stayton and was im
pressed with their hustle and desire.
Center Feddie Krukoff and forward
James Ahyakak have shown the
greatest improvement over last
season so far.
“ There’s a lot of room for im
provement,” Lippy warned, “ and
we’re still working on fundamentals,
but I’m happy with what I ’ve seen so
far.”
Girls to run and gun
On the other hand, the girls bas
ketball team will be much shorter
this year. Coach Yvonne Hale will
have only three players, Susie Mar
chand, Janet Pakootas and Arlene
Senator, with any varsity experience.
To offset this lack of height the
girls will feature a fast running
game, good outside shooting and an
aggressive man-to-man (or rather,
girl-to-girl) defense.
Here’s a question: if the boys
teams are called the Braves, what
should the girls teams be called?
It was a very good year
No scores were kept, but if they
had been, Chemawa would have
added another team title at the all-
Indian Championships at Haskell
Institute. The Braves placed four
runners, Arthur Ambrose, Mike
George, Delbert Okbaok and Jacob
Merculief, in the top 15 finishers"
They’ve been running in the
shadow of the boys all year, but the
girls cross-country team has also
done well for the school this year.
At Haskell they took an unofficial
second place behind Intermounfain
School (Utah).
They also placed
four runners, Carol Andrews, Kathy
Andrews, Emma Leavitt and Jenni
fer Joseph, in the top 15 finishers.
With the exception of seniors
Kathy and Carol, the team consists
almost entirely of freshmen. “ For a
young team they did an outstanding
job,” Coach Hale said.
