Have you ever realized how much
Chemawa has changed in the. past
few years? Mrs Tonia Campbell
..has- She taught English here three
years ago, and. now she is back as a
substitute teacher- . ,
She feels that the main change is
in 'th e staff’s attitude towards the
students- They seem to be more
understanding as to the needs of the
students-
The dress code has changed very
much. Three years ago the boys
couldn’t have their hair below the
collar, and their shirts had to be
buttoned. Girls wore dresses all
the time. Now students can feel to
dress the way they choose, and not
as they are “ supposed” to—as long
as thev dress neatly.
“ Students also seem more verbal
and outspoken now,” Mrs. Campbell
adds-
The hostilities between Alaskan
and Northwest students have chang
ed greatly, Mrs. Campbell
feels.
There probably are some misunder
standings between them, but you see
more and more Northwest and Alask
an friends together.
There are more activities now for
the students with the Title I pro
gram.
When Mrs. Campbell last taught
here, the classrooms were not car
peted.
“ The appearance of the
classrooms is a lot brighter,” Mrs.
Campbell commented. She also not
ed that the choice in courses has
improved significantly. A few years
ago the only English courses avail
able were English I—IV and a few
elective courses.
Mrs. Campbell had decided to sub
stitute at Chemawa because she
found she really likes the students.
A G o o d b y e to L if e
Chemawa never made the pages of
L ife, but the m agazine was an im
portant part of the school Life died
w ith the old year, a victim of rising
postag e rates and ad v ertisin g com

It is im possible to c a lc u la te ju st
how many stu d e n ts were “ turned o n ”
to current ev e n ts and to reading in

slow reader could enjoy
Many teach ers remember their own
days as stu d en ts when they cut out
the p ictu res to illu stra te their re

did the same thing right up to the

the supply of back is s u e s holds out"
A lis t of all the sp e c ia l books and

the fie ld s) that this p u b licatio n made

From R obert Capa and the Spanish
C ivil War to Dave D uncan and V iet

and helped to destro y the old c lic h e s
of m ilitary glory”
Our own American Life suppli-
ment was patterned after Life’s
pioneer work in photo-journalism,
and the title as well as the inspira
tion came from Life. Several other
school papers have also used this
format.

It’s hard to say goodbye to a fri

hole in our educational resources
that will be hard to fill”

What would you like to get for the
school or for yourself in 1973?
Here’s what the staff had to say
about it.
Mr. Ouchi: “ I’m wishing for a clean
er campus, both here and for the new
school.”
Mr. “ Choctaw” Smith: “ A good
supply of Alka-Seltzer so I can swa
llow the whole thing.
Mr. Bartlett: “ A new school for ev
eryone and a new rug for my office.”
Mr. Lippy: “ Some 7-footers or ten
guys who will play like 7-footers.”
Mr. Simmons: “ A 6th period about
half the size of the one we’ve got.”
Mr. Robinson: “ I’d like to see more
pride in the school and a clean
campus.”
W e 'v e B e e n Z i p p e d l
“ Somewhere in the 4900 block on
Indian School Road.”
According to Mr. Pete Reeder,
that will be Chemawa’s new address
when the Marion County Planning
Commission approves the desig
nation sometime next week.
Chemawa hasn’t moved, but the
old address of Chemawa, Oregon
97306 no longer exists. The closing
of the Chemawa Post Office was
brought about by reorganizations
within the U. S. Postal Service.
We were just one of several small
branch stations eliminated.
So readers, take note. If you want
to write to us, the new address is
Salem, 97303.
