Chemawa opened the 1972 football
season by dropping a pair of non
league games to Scio and Kennedy.
Chemawa’s first game, September 8,
was a study in frustration. The Braves
could do nothing right and the Loggers
could do nothing wrong. By the time
it was over,. Scio had rolled up 62
points while holding Chemawa score
less.
Chemawa recovered from its stage
fright enough to make a respectable
showing against Kennedy in its first
home game. Defense got the Braves
their first points of the season as the
Chemawa front line, led by Alvin Pen
ney, trapped the Kennedy quarterback
in his own end zone for a safety.
Fullback Lloyd Vincent added a touch
down on a six-yard plunge, but that
was all the Braves could get as Ken
nedy won, 24-8.
The Gladstone Gladiators showed
why they are the top-ranked AA team
in the state as they pounded the Braves
58-8 on September 22.
The visiting Gladiators, led by all-
state back Kurt Romburg, scored five
times in the first half and then coasted
to an easy win. Chemawa avoided a
shutout when quarterback Andrew Too-
yak hit Don Black with a twelve-yard
scoring pass late in the second quart
er. Black added a tw.o-point conver
sion.
With several key players missing,
the smaller, inexperienced Braves
were simply unable to handle the big
ger, quicker Gladstone team which
won the state title last year and is
undefeated so far this year.

The Chemawa Cross-Country squad
opened the 1972 season with three
straight league wins. Chemawa has
never lost a meet to a Capital Confer
ence opponent.
The Braves defeated Gladstone 17-
38 on September 9th. Delbert Okbaok,
Roger Adams, Mike George and Jacob
Merculief took the first four places
and freshman Sam Beetus came in
seventh to’ complete the Chemawa
total.
In their first home meet the Braves
had some trouble with Woodburn, but
still won 24-33. Okbaok again was
the individual winner, covering the 254
mile course in 13:18. Roger Adams
was a step behind at 13:19.
The Braves continued their string
at North Marion by drubbing the Hus
kies 17-42. Delbert and Roger fi
nished in a tie for first, while Mike
and Jacob came in third and fourth.
Sam Beetus was a surprisingly strong
seventh.
With Art Ambrose and Harold Hunt
ington from last year’s championship
team now back and working out, Coach
Kugie Louis is beginning to dream
about the state championship trophy
which the Braves ju st missed last
year.
