Senator George McGovern paid a
visit to the Chemawa campus on May
22nd of this year, the day before Ore
gon’s Presidential primary.
Senator McGovern, now the Demo
cratic nominee, toured the academic
buildings, Mitchell Hall and the Ad
ministration Building, talked to teach
ers and members of the Advisory
School Board and ate lunch with the
students in the Dining Hall.
He also took some time to wander
around the campus and talk with indi
vidual students. Classes were not
in session, as it was the day before
Graduation. The last edition of the
American was also on the presses
when the Senator arrived.
Several students collected auto
graphs on their yearbooks and also
got a chance to speak to McGovern
about his campaign. Students also
got a chance to meet and watch the
secret service men and the small army
of news reporters accompanying the
campaign.
McGovern won the Democratic Pri
mary the next day, polling over twice
as many votes as his nearest compe
titor, Governor George Wallace of
Alabama.
