The Baseball Braves have played
an additional three games in the last
three weeks, and have won two of
them.
Chemawa defeated the North Marion
junior varsity 6-3. Pitcher Gene Pur
ser struck out eleven Huskies. Shan
non Cargo helped Purser to the win by
slamming a triple and Joe Moses added
a double.
Chemawa dropped a close 8-7 deci
sion to the Gervais varsity.

Moses continued his hoi hitting streak
by banging out a triple which drove in
two runs.
The Braves took another 6-3 win,
this time over the John F. Kennedy
jayvee squad. Alvin Charley was the
winne
winning pitcher for Chemawa, fanning
ten Kennedy batters and aiding his
own win by belting a home run. Joe
Moses and Don McCloud added doubles
for the Braves.
Gene Purser, a left-handed senior,
has pitched three complete games this
spring and has averaged just over nine
strikeouts per game. Joe Moses leads
the Chemawa batters.

Seven new track records were set
at Chemawa this year, six by the girls
and one by the boys.
Les Lafferty was the only boy to
break a record. He pole vaulted 12
feet to wipe out the old record of 11

This year the varsity track team has
won two out of five meets and has
had outstanding performances in all
meets.
There are thirty boys on the team
and most of them will go to district at
Gladstone. Top performers who are
likely to score points there are Jacob
Merculief (880), Pat James (sprints),
Arthur Ambrose, DelOkbaok and Roger
Adams (distances), John Matthew
(javelin) and Les Lafferty (pole vault).

Okbaok, James, Matthew and Lafferty
as the sta
as the steadiest performers. Roger
Adams, a sophomore two-miler, was
named as the best surprise of. the
year, and Adams and Lloyd Vincent
were named as being the most im
proved.
From district the team hopes to
send several performers to the State
Championships in June.

Janet Pakootas had a hand in break
ing three girls’ records. She high-
jumped 4’ 10” (see picture), long-
jumped 15’* 756” and was a member of
the 880 relay team which set a new
mark of 2:12. Other relay runners
were Rose Knight, Patty Simpson and
Lynn Miller.
Patty Simpson also se t a record in
the javelin, throwing 116’ 2” . JoAnn
Malemute lowered her own 880 record
to 2:46.5. Carol Andrews set a new
mark of 6:05 in the mile. The old
record was held by her older sister
Kathy.
