Four Students Ride with Sheriff
Four students from the model class,
Rita George, Ned Griest, Frances Pat
rick and Fred Walker, went on a field
trip to Silverton in a patrol car with
Corporal Thomas of the Marion County
Sheriff’s Patrol on March 27.
The purpose of the field trip was to
give the students an idea of what the
duties of a patrolman are and also to
see what it is like to go on a patrol.
“ It was fun,” said Frances Patrick,
describing the trip. “ It was exciting,
and I wouldn’t mind being a patrolman
because it seems to be very interest
ing.”

Winona Tries New Ideas
Winona Hall, the biggest dorm at
Chemawa, has been trying out new
ideas for recreation and dorm life.
The dorm this year has a population
of 170 girls with two to six girls in a
room.
The staff consists of 12 aides. The
aides make the girls feel more at home
by giving them someone to talk to
when they get lonesome. Each aide
has a unit of 16 to 20 girls.
The aides were asked how they
liked working with the girls. Miss
Francine Phair said, “ I really en
joyed working with the girls, and it
was a great experience.”
Mrs. Linda Goulden added, “ I liked
working with my girls and the staff.”
The Instructional Aide and Supervi
sor for the dorm is Mrs. Lorene Phil
lips. The counselors are Mrs. Myrna
McMurtry and Mrs. Martha Hutchins.
Miss Arlene Colon is the Dormitory
Manager,
The Winona Hall Dorm Council con
sists of Jean Morris, President; Loret
ta Samuels, Secretary; Karen Pinkham,
Treasurer; Sarah George, Representa
tive.
Throughout the year the different
individual units have taken trips to
many places.
Ka-nee-ta, in Warm
Springs, the Portland Zoo, bowling
and movies in Salem, mountain trips
and hii
and hikes.
They have had slumber parties in
the dorm and are learning handcrafts
also. The girls with the best-looking
room get treated to a steak dinner off
campus.
The different units will be taking
more trips and planning more parties
before the year ends. Some of them
will go to the Ice Follies in Portland
or on a hike to Silver Creek Falls
near Silverton. They also plan over
night camping trips, and date parties
on the patio of Winona. The whole
dorm will be going to the beach on
May 4.
Mrs. Phillips says, “ The students
and staff are looking forward to an
even better appearance and life in
Winona Hall before the year is over.”
