Starting January 19th, the first Rifle
Club for Chemawa Indian School, was
formed.
The school’s Recreation Dept, is
working with the club, which is spon-
sered by the Optomist Club from down
town Salem, through cooperation with
the Oregon National Guard.
Mr. LeRoy Selam, a member of the
Yakima Tribe, spoke to several of the
English classes on January 12. He
spoke on several things pertaining
to the Indian of today and the Indian
of yesterday.
Mr. Selam is an author, lecturer,
poet arid Indian singer. He knows his
own language and the old ways of his
tribe.
He also attended Chemawa
during the 1940’s.
Mr. Selam talked about one poem
that he wrote. The poem was pub
lished last year in “ The Indian His
torian” . The name of the poem is
“ What Is This Upon My Land?”
This poem is based upon “ what is
happening to the Indians today” .
Mr. Selam also showed other books
written by other Indian authors and
poets. He said he felt it was his
duty to talk to Indian people and help
keep Indian students in school. He
said that he hoped to come back and
sing with the N.I.C.E. Club.

If you have less than twenty, you’d
better take Miss Graham’s English

often. They may wonder about the
bad habit you picked up cutting
across the dining hall each lunchtime.
