ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY HELD
On Monday, September 29, there
was an all school assembly at
Chemawa that featured a musical
group from San Francisco called
The Wheelers.
Frank Wheeler, his wife and
daughter formed the trio, which
performed on Latin American in
struments with the Marimba being
highlighted.
The most popular
part of the program was a produc
tion number involving puppet-like
musical clowns.
These were
operated by The Wheelers, who
made them play minature musical
instruments (that is, when the
clown named Alvin wasn’t creating
a humorous disturbance). Among
the well known songs played were
Tara’s Theme and the theme song
from Dr. Zhivago. Three of the
Latin songs played were Spanish
Eyes, Lady of Spain and Yellow-
bird.
Two Classical selections
were presented. They were The
Flight of the Bumblebee and the
Overture of Poet and Peasant.
In a backstage interview, the
trio told reporters that they have
played on such well known tele
vision shows as Ed Sullivan and
Lawrence Welk.
Chemawa students should con
sider it a privilege to have had the
Wheelers here and should be flat
tered by Mr. Wheeler’s statement
that this was one of the best
audiences he had ever performed
for.
JR. ROTARIAN
Jeslie Kaleak was the first
student in the history of Chemawa
High School to be elected Junior
Rotarian of the Sporran Keizer
Rotary Club. He was elected for
his outstanding leadership. The
Rotarians are a service club
developed to service the Salem
area.
