The Public H ealth Service
o ffe rs the Chemawa students
a very complete medical care
program. A fu ll-tim e physi
cian, as well as 24-hour a
day nursing s e rv ic e , i s a-
vailable throughout the year.
For those stu d e n ts who are
not physically able to attend
classes, a 12-bed infirm ary
i s a v a ila b le . A f u ll- tim e
d e n tist is on duty each day
of school. Next year the den
ta l program w ill be expanded
to include two d entists.

mote the hqalth of each stu
dent, so th at he wi11 be in
optimal condition, medically,
to benefit from h is learning
experiences^
All students receive a tho-.
rough physical- examination
upon th eir arrival at school.
Any previous health problems
should be brought to the a t
tention of the doctor a t th is
time. Chest x-rays are done
on each student along with
the tu b e rc u lo sis skin t e s t
on selected students to make
sure no one has th is disease.
Audiograms (hearing te s ts )
are performed on a ll students
to determine i f they might
have a h earin g lo s s which
might a f f e c t t h e i r c la s s
work. Vision te s ts are also
performed on a l l stu d en ts,
and those requiring glasses
are sent to a sp e cia list.
Many immunizations (shots)
are given throughout the year
to p r o t e c t s tu d e n ts from
d iseases, such as measles*
mumps, ‘flu’ * diptheria, t e t
anus, smallpox and polio.
I f a student has a medical
problem which requires hos
p i t a l i z a t i o n o r need of a
m edical s p e c i a l i s t , th e se
services are also provided.
