Seventeen s tu d e n ts are en­
r o lle d in Cadet Teaching, a
course which has been o ffered
fo r the f i r s t time th is year.
T h is c l a s s was o f f e r e d - t o
give college-bound s tu d e n ts
a chance to explore the fie ld
o f , t e a c h i n g as a p o s s ib l e
c a re e r.
The c la s s s t a r t e d w ith an
o rie n ta tio n period, which was
ta u g h t by Mrs. Helen M att,
Supervisory Teacher, English
Department. A fter the o rie n ­
t a t i o n was c o m p leted , th e
s t u d e n t s were a s s ig n e d a
te a c h e r , whom th ey were to
work w ith and a s s i s t . They
have done such things as take
a tte n d a n c e , o p e ra te d u p li-
e a tin g m achines, c o n s tr u c t
b u l l e t i n b o a rd s, grade p a­
p e rs and ta k e c are o f re a d ­
ing announcements. They have
a ls o a s s i s t e d th e t e a c h e r
in working with in d iv id u a ls
and sm all groups.
An unexpected b e n e fit from
t h i s program was r e a l i z e d
d u rin g th e r e c e n t f lu e p i-,
dem ic. With more th a n te n
te a c h e rs i l l and no s u b s t i ­
t u t e s a v a ila b le ,; t h e Cadet
Teachers were, ih'some cases,
a c tu a lly able to conduct the
low er d iv is io n c la s s e s . In
o th er groups they took r o l l ,
made assignm ents and su p e r­
v ise d study.

pying a good sh a re o f each
student* s day.
I n i t s b r o a d e s t m eaning,
education i s a p ro ce ss th a t
begins when we are born and
c o n tin u e s th ro u g h o u t l i f e .
However, to our young people
in h ig h s c h o o l, e d u c a tio n
must have a s p e c ia l and more
personal meaning i f i t i s to
serve than in l a t e r years.
At Chemawa, we work to pro ­
v id e f o r each s tu d e n t th e
w idest p o s s ib le e x p e rie n c e
in general education as well
as the o p p o rtu n ity fo r p e r ­
s o n a l knowledge t h a t th e s e
s tu d e n ts w ill soon go fo rth
in to a world where each must
fu n c tio n as an in d iv id u a l;
where each must evaluate and
decide h is course o f actio n ;
where each must have regard
n o t only fo r h is o r h er own
proglem s, b ut a ls o fo r th e
problem s o f o th e r s ; and f i ­
n a l l y , where each m ust be
w illin g to a c c e p t -responsi­
b i l i t y fo r th e consequences
o f b i s actions, i f indiv id u al
freedom i s to have re a l mean­
ing fo r a l l .
T his has been a good y ear
a t Chemawa. With stro n g s tu ­
d e n t le a d e r s h ip , a c a p ab le
and d e d ic a te d s t a f f , and a
s tu d e n t body which c o n tin u ­
a l l y s t r i v e s to widen i t s
educational horizons, we look
fo rw ard to many more such
y ears.
