S t u d e n ts a t Chemawa a re
r a p i d l y r e c o v e r in g fro m a
siege o f the f l u , which near­
l y rea che d e p id e m ic s ta g e s
the l a t t e r p a r t o f December
wi th a t o t a l number o f 310
i l l . The s h o r t d u r a tio n o f
the illn e s s and the q u ick r e ­
covery was p ro ba bly p a r t i a l l y
due to the fa c t th a t over 300
s lu d e n t s had r e c e iv e d f l u
s h o ts e a r l i e r .
The h ig h e s t in c id e n t o f s tu ­
d en ts c o n fin e d to the dorm i­
to r ie s was Dec. 26, when 208
w ere in b e d . On th e 2 7 th ,
151 w e re s t i l l - o n th e s ic k
l i s t and by New Y e a r’ s Eve
o n ly 13 were, s t i l l a i l i n g .
S tu d e n ts w ith te m p e ra tu re s
o f 100 o r more were n o t a l ­
lo w e d a t th e d in i n g h a l l .
T h e ir -tra y s were b ro u g h t to
them a t the dorms. Whi le con­
fin e d a t th e d o r m ito r ie s th e
s tu d e n ts were checked d a i l y
by th e m e d ic a l s t a f f . Any
s tu d e n t th a t showed in d ic a ­
t io n s o f c o m p lic a tio n s was
removed to the H e a lth C en te r
o r ta ke n to th e h o s p it a l in
Salem.
A t th e p re s e n t tim e , I t i s
f e l t by th e s t a f f o f t h e
H ealth C enter th a t w h ile th is
was p r o b a b ly an A s ia n ty p e
f l u v ir u s , f t has y e t to be
c o n firm e d as th e Hong JCong
v a r ie t y , and fo r th is reason
s tu d e n ts a re urg ed to re p o r t
a l l i l l n e s s e s p r o m p tly as
th e re i s a p o s s i b i l i t y th a t
they m ig h t y e t g e t th e Hong
Kong f l u . S tu d e n ts t h a t ex­
p e rie n c e chest p a in s a re es­
