OF THE MONTH WINNERS
Folk S in g ers V is it
The Tyroleans, three Austrian
folk singers,
who are touring the
United States as a part of the Nat
ional Schools Assemblies Programs,
presented a program
in the school
auditorium on February 9.
They were dressed in the short
leather trousers, bright vests, and
knee length stockings typical
of
the people of their country. Their
songs and dances were chosen to il
lustrate the history and culture of
their native country.

also student body treasurer,

Has Good Season
the Junior Varsity
wound up
another good season of basketball.
They weren’t always on the top end
of the scoring, but they did manage
to win 7 of their 10 games and the
statistics indicate that they might
turn into good varsity material for
another year.
Scoring averages for the 10 game
season was 65.1 points per
game.
They were able to hold their
foes
to a 48.7 average.
~ Field goal attempts were a good
.340 percentage, while they hit
a
solid .492 from the free throw.
High scorers for the team were
tony Melovidov 118, Byron George
117, and William Albert 93.
Next season the JVs will have to
compete in the larger A-2 division
of Junior Varsity.
Runners Com pete
At Portland
On Saturday, February 3, Chemawa
took part in an invitational 6 mile
run at Judson High School. A total
of 57 runners
started the race.
First place went to runner A1 Boice
of Jackson High, Portland. His time
was 32 minutes. Chemawa*s Ed Omnik
'finished just 38 seconds behind him
but was only able to come up
with
fifth place. Nelson Begay finished
sixth and was a mere 27 seconds in
back of Ed.
The first regular
scheduled
track meet of the season, w i l l
be
the Willamette Relays to be held on
March 30.
As a young boy, Herbert Hoover
lived with Dr. H. J. Minthorn when
that gentleman was superintendent
of Chemawa.
PE SPONSORS LONG RUN
On January 19, the Physical Edu
cation Department sponsored a
six
mile run. The event attracted
41
rugged individuals, who
competed
over a rough hill and dale
course
which had been plotted
around the
campus.
The
first five finishers were;
Emmanual Tuzroyluke 47 minutes, Ed
Omnik 47.05, Nelson
Begay 47.50,
Edwig Pete 48.26,
and
Leonard
Huntington 49.15.
Plans are now underway for a
series of meets, with the distance
moving up to 8 miles.

CONCLUDE
B’ LEAGUE PLAY
The Chemawa Braves have just
wound up their final year in the
Marion County B League
with a 13-
5 record, one of the best in three
seasons. Next
season the Braves
enter the Capital Conference
A-2
division.
Leading scorers for the season
were Wilbur Begay and Kee Wilson,
who have each averaged
16 points
per game for the 18 game season.
Returning regulars next season
will be the teams leading rebounder
Percy Frisby and sophomores Hubert
Hobson and Sam Leavitt.
CHURCH LEAGUE HANGS ONTO FIRST
Chemawa’s Church League Basket
ball Team was able to
hang onto
first place even though they
were
defeated twice in league play.
The church league is made up of
various teams in the community and
each is sponsored by a local church
or youth group.
The team members are high school
students, who for some reason
are
unable to play on a regular varsity
team.
Competition is not a
rugged as
a regular interscholastic program
but the boys have a chance to play
some good games and get acquainted
with other fellows in the area.
