ENGLISH TEACHER RETIRES
One of the familiar faces around
campus is noticeably absent this
year. Mrs. Louise B. Johannaber re
tired after teaching for the Bureau
for 23 years, most of that time at
Chemawa. Mrs. Johannaber’s teach
ing duties proved her versatility
and many talents. During her time
on campus she taught social stud
ies, art, music, and English. Her
duties included choir director, dra
matics coach, and for several years
she was the editor and faculty
sponsor for the American.
When asked what she intended
to do with her time after retire
ment, she state that she was just
going to try and be a housewife.
She did admit, however, that if
time became a | little heavy she
would like to try Her lifelong ambi
tion of doing a little writing.
The staff of the American wish
Mrs. Johannaber the best of every
thing.

Notes from the
Health Center

Medical Center
Students have now been, taking
INH for eight weeks. Records show
that most students are taking the
pills. However, there are 55 stu-
dents should take advantage of this
opportunity while it is available
for everyone’s protection.
The Mitchell Hall boys are best
at taking the pills, Winona, Mc
Nary, and Brewer are a toss-up for
the dorm with the most misses.
The Health Center has a stand
ard form for the dormitory group
leaders to keep records.
On the whole, students are doing
a good job. They are proving that
Chemawa enrollees accept responsi
bility and are learning the value
of good health.
AUTO SHOP GETS ANALYZER
The auto shop has secured a new
Sun Motor Analyzer. This instru
ment is capable of making com
plete evaluations of the auto engine
performance. With instruction and
skill the boys are able to tune up
any car. The auto shop is always an
interesting place but this year it
has been even more interesting.
There are 38 boys who are taking
auto shop this year.
STUDY CENTER
Mrs. Johanneber always commanded a
ready audience in one of her English or
literature classes.
FRIDAY MOVIE DATE FUN
Each Friday evening the junior
and senior students have been go
ing to town for movie dates. If
they don’t want to go to the show
they may go shopping instead.
They ride a city bus which leaves
Chemawa Campus at 6:15 p.m. The
same bus leaves downtown for the
return to campus at 11:30 p.m.

The study center is open five
nights a week from 7 to 9 p.m. It
is really a good place to study. It’s
nice and quiet and you have plen
ty of encyclopedias and reference
books to use.
I hope the evening study hours
last- all year, and that other stu
dents firm it as profitable~asT do?

STUDENTS TAKE VOCATIONAL
COOKING
Thirteen girls and four boys are
getting on the job training in the
school cafeteria. They spend a half
day, five days a week in practice
and theory of food services.
The course consists of things
like: storage, sanitation, meat carv
ing, vegetable preparation, cooking,
baking, and table decoration.
The other half day they are en
rolled in the regular academic pro
gram and are keeping up with their
regular high school credits.
SHOT ON HUNTING TRIP
On Saturday morning November
19, Mr. John Hippie, teacher guid
ance, was accidentally shot in the
leg, while on a hunting trip. Mr.
Hippie was hunting with Mr. Tad-
lock near Crooked Finger Road
south of Silverton. Another hunter
in the area accidentally shot Mr.
Hippie in the leg.
Mr. Hippie was taken to-Silver-
ton Hospital, where he was given
medical attention. He has now been
released and is recuperating at
home and hopes to return to work
soon,

This is the second staff member
to be injured this year. Mr. Dan
Cahill, teacher, was injured in an
auto accident earlier and has not
yet returned to work.

Students Stuff
Selves on Stuffing
Thanksgiving dinner at the din
ing hall was another of Mr. Doug
las’ gala feasts.
The usual menu of roast turkey
with all the trimmings and liberal
portions of mine and pumpkin pie.
An additional treat was a smorg
asbord of fresh fruit which was
spread on a long table in the din
ing hall and which students visited
at their desire.
Dinner was served from 1:00 un
til 4:00 p.m. After the huge meal
the ones that"; ¿were stuffed and
was consumed the students were
the turkey was pretty slim.

ROLLER SKATING IS FUN
The recreation club has made ar
rangements with Salem Skateland
to roller skate every Sunday. The
bus leaves McBride parking lot at
12:30 p.m. and returns tp campUs
at 3:45 p.m.
In each dorm a representative of
the recreation club is assigned to
take names of those desiring to
go skating.

STUDENTS SWIM AT Y POOL
Each Thursday evening there is
swimming at the YWCA in Salem.
The bus leaves from McBride Hall
parking lot at 6:50 p.m. and returns
to campus about 9:00 p.m.
This activity is limited to 36 boys
and girls who will have to go on a
rotation basis.
The list is posted on the bulletin
board in each dormitory.
