DOG SLED RACE
SPECIALIZED TRAINING
James a Jackson is studying of
fice practice with Mr. Sipes. He is
learning office procedures, the use
of the more common office ma
chines and supply problems.
A limited number of boys inter
ested in Quantity Food are training
with Mr. Douglas in the , school
kitchen. The class is very active,
learning a great deal and, also the
food is very good.
ARTS AND CRAFTS SALE
During the production of the
Birthday Pageant the students sold
a great many of their projects. Stu
dents operated the booths, It was
good experience in meeting the
public and making change.

COG WHEELERS TO BOAT SHOW
The representatives and officers
of the Shops Cog Wheel Club at
tended the 4th annual Boat Show
in Portland. Thirty-two students,
representing the 8 different shops,
went on this trip.
Besides the display of boats, mo
tors, fishing gear, guns and vaca
tion equipment, there were trained
hunting dogs. The dogs put on a
most enjoyable show. Other attrac
tions of the show were a man
wrestling an alligator, and horse
shoe pitching championship exhib
it. On the way home we stopped
for hamburgers which wound up a
fine field trip.

CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT
The Shops Department, with the
cooperation of the Student Council,
is building benches to be placed
about the "campus for student use.
The Student Council bought mater
ials and students from the Metal,
Carpentry and Paint Shops are con
structing them. The frames of
wrought iron were designed by the
Metal Shop. The seat and back rest
are of cedar wood.
This is a very valuable mass pro
duction project. Several have al
ready been placed about the camp
us which adds much to its park
like appearance.

In mechanical drawing we learn
to draw the exact view of what we
are making. We learn to use differ
ent tools but most of all we learn
to be exact.

TAKING A HIGH ONE!
BASKETBALL AT FALLS CITY
February 4, our basketball team
played Falls City, there. A hard
fought game to the last, Chemawa
was defeated by only.2 points. Falls
City seems to have the best team
in the league this year and we con
gratulate them on their good play
ing. This defeat put Chemawa in
secqnd place in the league this
year.

WINONA HALL SOPHS
HOUSE COUNCIL SPONSORS
VALENTINE DANCE
February 14 the Winona House
Council and sophomore girls spon
sored the dance at the gym. Decor
ations were hearts of all sizes. A
refreshment table was decorated in
the Valentine theme.
At intermission time a group of
dancers presented some Indian
Dances. Since this was a gala af
fair, the students looked exception
ally nice.

UNIT 2 WINS BREWER TROPHY
Unit 2 won the trophy at Brewer
as being the best unit in the dorm.
This unit has always been ahead. It
was exciting to hear they had won
again as they had tried very hard.

Twenty-one boys from the Ex
plorer Scouts attended the Mt.
Hood Cascade dog sled races. Elev
en dog teams started the 5 mile
run. The winning team made the
run in 45 minutes.

Who would ever think of racing
dogs in Oregon? Dorothy Christian
sen,; a seasoned dog musher, gave
me the opportunity to enter one of
the most unexpected dog races in
my life.
As I was watching, she camé up
and asked if I would like to run
her dogs in the 5. mile race. I
looked at the gray, Siberian huskies
and decided I would race them.
The race was very exciting. The
dogs were not too well trained and
I almost had to lead them where I
wanted them to go. It was work but
fun. In spite of my team and stop
ping to help another driver who
was in trouble with her dogs, I
came in 7th.

WINONA HOUSE COUNCIL
ENJOYS DINNER PARTY
Recently the Winona H o u s e
Council enjoyed a dinner party at
China City. Mrs. Pentecost, Mrs.
Phillips and Miss Mitchell were
guests. Each girl had a choice of
Chinese or American food. The
girls enjoyed dressing up and eat
ing in a restaurant. All the money
was earned selling pop corn, bot
tles and goodies at games and in
the building.

WINONA HOLDS TRADITIONAL
OPEN HOUSE
February 22 is the traditional
day for Winona’s Open House. For
weeks before the girls are busy
getting the whole building, as at
tractive as possible. Visitors are in
vited from 10-11 a.m. Refreshments
are served by the girls. This year
the patriotic theme was carried out.
This begins Chemawa’s Birthday
celebration.

CHRISTMAS COFFEE FOR STAFF
December 18, the 10th grade
girls prepared and served a coffee
for the staff in their Christmas
Hostess project. Plastic wreaths
made from plastic bags hung at
each window and the table was
decorated with a sprayed tree and
red reindeer. Mr; Two Stars, who
resigned, was the honored guest.
