PAINTING A NEW HOUSE
Leslie Saganna, Billy Soplu,. Pe
ter Walter, Paul Evan, Cecil. Har
vey, and I are taking painting'for
our vocational training.
We have been able to prove our
abilities as painters. We have
painted the . entire surface of a
new house. Some of the ceilings
were of special texture that is
real soft. We varnished the kitch-
| en ¿cabinets, the doors and wood
work.
We know that the appearance
of this house could have been
ruined i f ; we had smeared paint
on new wood surfaces where it
did not belong. Now, after our ex
perience, we boys think that we
know what we can do if we ever
get a painting job.

Chemawa'is happy to announce
that one of its students, Olga Muk
toyuk, has just been issued a Cer
tificate of Equivalency by the Ore
gon Department of EducatiojjSThis
means that she has completed work
equivalent to a high school gradu
ate. Because of satisfactory scores
that she made on the General Edu
cation Development Tests,- she was
given this certificate. We are all
very proud of her. Olga comes from
King Island, Alaska. —Grace One

Almost all of the rooms in Mc
Nary HalThave been equipped with
study table lamps. The boys can
study better with the good lights
now we can not use the old excuse
that the lights were too poor to do
our home work. The boys should
be grateful for the new lamps and
take good care of them.
The boys all enjoy the cofee
hour which we have every Satur
day and Sunday. Some of the boys
help serve coffee.
McNary Hall still have some Na
vajo. boys that have the gift and
knowledge of making good fry
bread. These boys make fry bread
and sell them for lOc and 5c de
pending on the size of the piece of
bread. We all enjoy eating fry
bread.
On February 17th Mr. Matt took
the group of McNary Hall Unit
leaders on a trip to Bachelor Butte,

Lucky Lee L. Begay won a re
cord at Meier & Frank Store in Sa
lem. Lee is to go in town and
pick out the record that he wants.

SUNDAY DINNER
On Sunday, January 20, our Sun
day school’ class had a dinner over
at Miss Old’s home. While we were
there we watched television and
looked at annuals. We had chick
en with biscuits and other good
things, and had a wonderful time.

OUR TRIP TO THE
NEWSPAPER PLANT
At the newspaper plant, we saw
the movable type. This method had
been discovered by the Chinese
several hundred years ago. It was
thought that Johann Gutenberg, a
Gerinan, was the first European
printer to use the movable type.

A DAY IN TOWN
Last Saturday a' number of boys
went to town. Lewis Wesley and I
were among them. After we all left
the bus everyone seemed to be go
ing places except Lewis and me.
We didn’t know where to go so we
decided to just walk around and
look’ at things for a little while.
Lewis suggested that we go to
Pikes Ice Cream place and have
something to eat and drink. After
we had finished eating I asked
Lewis if he would like to go to the
YWCA. He said that h e, would so
we went there. There were many
boys swimming in the pool and
Lewis joined them. Man can that
boy swim and dive. I watched
them for a little while and then I
went to the Payless Drug store to
wait for Lewis. I wanted to buy
some things in the drug store. Lewis
met me there at 4:00 o’clock and
then we came back to^hemawa.
We had a good time On our trip
to Salem.

FROM THE SCIENCE CORNER
Through the Microscope
One afternoon, when we got to
our classroom in Home; Economics,
we found a microscope on the
counter. Our Home Economics
teacher showed us how to use the
instrument. After we learned how
to use the microscope we started
looking at everything we could find.
One girl took a hair from her head
and we looked at it. The split end
of the hair looked like a tree. Some
other girls from another classroom
came to see and use the microscope.
It is interesting to look at things
through a microscope.

Experiments With Sounds
The last couple of weeks we have
have been experimenting with
sounds with glasses with water in
them. We also used two spoons and
a string on the end of the spoon.
We listened to see which makes
more noise; the spoon with a string
to our ears, or the spoon hitting
something without the string. The
string hëlped to make more noise.
We also put a glass with paper in
side of it and we put it up to our
ear and listened. First, we listened
with the pape rinside of it and then
without the paper. We learned that
without the paper it makes more
noiSe. We get all these but .of the
science book about experiments of
sounds. It’s really fun.

Weather
For the past few weeks we have
had very nice weather. It gets
cloudy for awhile and then the sun
shines. Even with the sunshine it
has been quite cold. I don’t; blind
this kind of weather because we
have the same kind at home. My
home is in Klawock, Alaska,
My dad wrote and said that this
is the first winter that there has
been snow at home in ,four years.
He wrote that the snow only lasted
one day, then it melted. I Surely
wish that I could see a lot of snow
again.
In Oregon I like the sunshine
and the cold but I do not like the
rain. Rain, rain, please stay away!

Students and teachers are experi
menting with a new technological
device that has just recently been
put into use in academic. It is the
thermofax overhead projector. In
every room where it has been used
the results have been pleasing
