Students Enjoy Trips to Coast
OUR TRIP TO THE COAST
We saw Boiler Bay where the
water splashes out of a tunnel.
Then we went to Depoe Bay. We
saw some boats there. We went
under a bridge to cross the street.
The bus driver showed us where
some seals were swimming in an
aquarium. We went back to the bus
and went to the coast. We ate our
lunch there and then we took off
our shoes and played on the beach.

We found seaweed along thè
shore and we found some sea shells.
We roped the girls with the sea
weed.

Some of the girls looked for sea
shells, barnacles and starfish. We
came back to Chemawa at 4 o’clock.

The bus stopped when we were
going to the ocean. A truck pushed
us and then the bus started again.
We had lots of fun on the beach.

A SATURDAY TRIP
We went to the coast with Mr.
Oetinger. We ate lunch on the
beach. It was a nice picnic and
after we built the fire we went for
a walk looking for agates. None of
us found any.
A fter this fun, we went to visit
a man who has a wolf and he talk
ed to us about his experiences with
the wolf. He also had some Alaskan
Huskies. He told us about what
races his dogs have been in and
showed us some trophies he had
won. His son took us for a ride on
a derby-like car and hitched the
dogs to it and we went for a ride
on the beach. We went over sand
dunes.

WE SEE THE SEA
On Halloween Day our class went
to the ocean. When we came back
to school we talked about what we
had seen. Here are some of the
things the boys and girls said:
The ocean is cool. The waves look
like snow in fro n t of a snowplow.

The ocean is so 'big and angry it

WE SAW THE OCEAN
I liked the ocean. I ran in and out
of th e w ater. It was fun.

I was scared of th e ocean a t first. I
ra n from th e waves. The waves had
soap on top. They m ade a big noise.
The waves are strong. The waves
brought in some weeds -that looked like
rope. Some boys used them fo r roping.

It was nice to see the ocean. I have
never seen so m uch w ater. It m ade such
■a noise. I always thought th a t you
would see m any fish and bugs in th e
w ater b u t I did not see any. I had fun.

I fe lt funny w hen I first saw the
ocean. I have seen p ictures of oceans
in books and I have seen anim als in it.
That is why I did no t walk into- the
ocean rig h t away. I t m ade noise and it
was very cold. I saw a rainbow when
th e w ater splashed.

"THE AWESOME SERVANT"
The Junior High had an assembly
for the purpose of viewing “ The
Awesome Servant.” Our teachers
first taught us some new words we
would need to know to better un
derstand the picture. We were also
assigned questions to find the an
swers as we watched the film. This
made us really understand the film.
It made us think how important it
is to finish high school.
NEW ARRIVALS IN
SCIENCE CLASS
In our Science class we have
eleven rats, two females, three
males, and there are six small ones.
Only one rat had babies. The other
female is still too young to have
babies. We feed them every day.
One student has to feed them all
through the week. Some students
come in and see them at 4 p.m. It’s
fun to have some animals in our
classroom. We have a snake and a
horned toad, too. One time the
snake ate a frog. It was interesting
the way he swallowed it. He didn’t
chew, he just swallowed it.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR
EDUCATIONAL TRIPS TO
OMSI AND PORTLAND ZOO
OMSI is a short way of saying
“ Oregon Museum and Science In
stitute.” It is located at Portland,
Oregon. A ll our scienca classes
want to visit OMSI before this
school year is over.
The m ost interesting thing th a t I
liked was th e electric eel. The eel has
a body th a t is long and snaky. It lo-ofcs
like one. The eel can discharge from
500 to 800 volts,

In the m useum I saw bones of animals
and a skull of an Indian. There was a
huge skull of a m am moth. I wish th a t
I could have stayed longer to get a
b e tte r lo-ok at some of th e o th er bones.

In the Planetarium , we learned m ore
about the stars. A t hom e I used to
w atch th e sta rs almost every night d u r
ing the w inter. I w atched the stars
because I was interested in them . I am
glad we learned m ore about them .

Was I interested in th e big heart! It
was as tall as the room and wide, too.
The leader told us all about it and
th en we w ent inside. We heard th e
beating of the heart.

A t OMSI th e little chicks were very
cute to hold. We saw m any different
kinds of eggs. The hum m ingbird’s eggs
w ere the sm allest ones. It was th e first
tim e I ever saw really small eggs.

The thing th a t in terested me most
at OMSI was the plastic lady who told
all about h er in tern al body. The plane
tarium about the stars was interesting,
too.

The first anim al I saw was a tiger.
This was the first tim e th a t I had ever
seen a live tiger. It was g re a t to see
th e Kodiak bear. W hen I h eard th e
story, it said the Kodiak iist th e biggest
of all bears. I had thought the polar
b ear was bigger.

I d id n ’t know m onkeys could make
faces. One m onkey stuck out its tongue
and sta rte d nodding it’s head. Those
monkeys w ere th e silliest, funnist look
ing monkeys- I ever saw. One of them
was m aking a sandwich w ith slices of
bread. He was piling -one on the other
and pounding it.

The big elephant surely m ade m e
laugh. She was moving back and fo rth
as though she was doing th e twist.

This was the firs t tim e I had ever
visited a zoo. It surely was interesting
to see all kind® of animals.

Packy and Me-Too. I enjoyed m ostly
the zebras.
