STUDENT
MY DUTIES AS STUDENT
COUNCIL TREASURER
As treasurer of the Student
Council I have to keep a record of
the Associated Students’ funds.
Every day I report to the adminis
tration office to sign the checks.
At the meetings of the Council
I read the vouchers so that the sec
retary will keep a record of the
vouchers’ numbers. My job also
includes serving on Student Coun
cil Committees and participating
in my share of the Council' activi
ties. One of my most important
duties is to watch for improve
ment. These are some of my duties
as treasurer of the Student Coun-
cil of Chemawa Indian School.

SCIENCE
This afternoon we did an experi
ment in science. It was called “The
Carbon Dioxide Eperifhenf,” We
used a drinking glass, a spoonj vin
egar, soda and water. First we put
a little soda and water in the glass
we mixed that together. Then we
added a few drops of vinegar and
watched the bubbles come up.

A PARTY IN TOWN
I went to a party in to#n. The
party was given by the church peo
ple. Father Warren invited us to
the party. Cookies, Koolaid, and
coffee were served at the party.
We enjoyed doing the twist and the
mashed potato dances.

SHOP PROJECTS
In shop boys are making all kinds
of projects. We have made picture
frames, all kinds of boxes, also a
sled. Now we are making projects
for i Christmas. I made a picture
frame and just finished it.

KEEP THE CAMPUS CLEAN
We do our best to keep the cam
pus clean. There is a truck that
comes every morning to empty the
outdoor trash cans. Every morning
we clean the yard around the dor
mitories and school buildings. We
like to keep our campus clean.
Some boys and girls are careless.
They throw trash around the cam
pus. We should all try to keep our
campus clean.

PINON NUTS
From September until November
the pinori nuts fall from the trees
at home. The trees that have pinon
nuts on them are far away from
our home. They are in a forest.
Each family makes camp out\ih
the forest. The whole family picks
pinon nuts.
Picking pinon nuts makes your
hands sticky and you get very tired.
It is hard work and everyone is
tired after they have worked all
day. It is fun, too, to be working
with your family.
You can roast pinon nuts in a
pan over a fire. They are real good
to eat.
You sell the pinon nuts at the
trading post and then you can buy
goods with the monpy.
We live at the camp until we
finish picking all the pinon nuts
that we can find. We hope that we
go picking pinon nuts again.

EXPLORER CLUB
The Explorers’ Club is made up of
a group of Chemawa students. One
of our activities is to patrol the
traffic^ on the campus. There are
many traffic hazards on our cam
pus as a highway and a railroad
run across the campus.
We hold meetings to talk over
and decide on better safety meth
ods that we can use. We wear uni
forms when we are on traffic duty.
So far the Explorers have been
successful in controlling traffic.
We are proud to be helpers on the
student road patrol.

singer, and Dr. Solon Ayers.
Mr. Madison Coombs from Jun
eau Area Office was a recent visit
or to Chemawa.
BOYS TOWN DAY
Every Saturday is always town
day for boys who have money and
want to go to town. Before a boy
Can go to town he must have a
good hair cut and have nice, clean
clothes or otherwise no town trip.
A boy must buy two bus tickets.
They cost twenty-five cents.
Most boys go to town for just a
pleasure trip like going to the
movies and walking around. Some
boys go to the stores and buy items
that they need. The boys leave
Chemawa at twelve-thirty and re
turn to the campus between four
and five.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
This year the students in Mrs^
Grapes’ room elected the following
officers: President, Jimmy Lewis;
vice president, Donna Begay; sec-
retary-treasurerj Virginia Calamity;
student council representative, Don
ald Johnson.
Our first class meeting was held
to talk about an educational trip.
We voted to go to the ocean. We
later learned that we could have
only one trip so we changed our
vote and we decided to go to the
Portland zoo.

SCIENCE CLASS
This year I am really interested
in science. I used to dislike that
subject most of all but now I really
like it.
We have learned about animals
and plants now we are studying
about minerals. I think that every
one should know at least a little
about all these things. They are
all important torus because we use
them in many different ways.
We have two rats, two horned
toads and three lizards in our sci
ence room. The students, in our
class, like to watch these animals.

CHRISTMAS AT CHEMAWA
We had a very nice time here at
Chemawa during our Christmas Va
cation. We had four days vacation.
Every classroom had a Christmas
party which all the students en
joyed. Our classroom teacher gave
each of us a treat.
