Recreation Activities
Labor Day was celebrated with a
Field Day. Because the weather
was so warm thè races were held
on the lawn in front of Winona
hall. There were sack races, three-
legged races, a marshmallow race
(this was very popular with the
younger students as everyone could
eat his marshmallow), a balloon
throw. The balloons were filled
with water so the losers really got
wet. The big event of the afternoon
was the tug-of-war. The losing team
was pulled through the water from
the hose— that was f^n as it was so
warm the cold water felt good. The
winners received prizes of peaches
and pears.
The newly appointed recreation
leaders helped Mr. Long and Mrs.
Oosterveen.
The Pep Club has been organized
with Mrs. Long as sponsor. There
are 75 members in the club. They
have elected the following girls as
their officers: P r e s i d e n t, Jane
Lind; Vice President, Olga Muk-
toyuk; Secretary, Lucy James;
Treasurer, Bertha Kayuk, Ward
robe mistress, Helen Hanely.
Cheer leading tryouts were held
in the gym with the following girls
to | lead our varsity team being
chosen: Elsie Atoyak, Marion Ani*
os, Kathy Inga and Grace Hansen.
They made their first appearance
at the Jamboree at Mill City. The
Pep Club with their bright red
sweaters added color to the excite
ment. This year the cheer leaders
have added white gloves to their
uniforms.— Jane Griest.
On Thursday night all the girls
go to the gym for recreation per
iods. The girls have been doing
physical fitness exercises. The Mc
Bride and Winona girls do these
exercises for ten minutes. The ex
ercise leaders get all the girls into
the halls to do five active exercis
es. Some of the girls had stiff
muscles at first.
Chemawa students are happy to
hear that the YWCA program is to
start September 23.
McBride girls are busy signing
up for the Rainbow Club. A group
of Rainbow girls from Salem under
the leadership of Mrs. Irma John
son will be coming each fourth Sat
urday of the month to hold club
meetings. Last year the girls who
were lucky enough to be in this
group had a great deal of fun. They
learned new hair styles, did craft
work, and learned to dance and do
new steps. This year the Rainbow
Girls will bring new projects to
oiir campus.
Rolleiskating is again in prog
ress at the gym. The McBride and
Mitchell students had to stand up
to eat last Sunday as many of them
took their first lessons on roller
skates on Saturday evening. Les
sons will foe given on Wednesday
afternoons for beginners. The new
organ records add to the pleasure
of roller skating.
Large crowds have been attend
ing the Friday night dances. The
hew room in the gym is opened
for the students to play table
games and visit with their friends.
The Flea Market (rummage sale)
has given many of the girls an op
portunity to buy some articles of
clothing as well as the high heels
that have been seen around the
campus.
Sunday night the girls hold their
guidance meetings in the auditor
ium. At the first meeting there was
a style show with the girls wearing
the proper and improper clothes
for various activities. Community
singing is popular with the girls.
Maybe some Sunday night you have
heard “On Chemawa” as the pro
gram usually ends with the girls
singing it and marching back to
the dormitories' |

GIRLS HELP TEA M
Last Friday at the football field
Elsie Oktoyak and I held a big
round hoop covered with paper for
the football players. When they
came onto the field they ran
through the hoop. We were worried
about it because we thought the
football players might hit us or
knock us down. We got along fine
and it was lots of fun.

M Y FIRST YEAR
This is my first year in Chemawa.
I surely enjoy staying here. When I
first came it seemed so lonesome
but it doesn’t any more. I had. a
good time on my trip to Chemawa.
It seems very different here, in
Oregon. When I went bean picking
I saw all kinds of live animals. I
saw horses, sheep and cows. When
I went bean picking I was always
cool in the morning and than I
would get very warm in the after
noon. Now I am getting used to
being in Chemawa I am also get
ting used to the weather.

Trip To Chemawa
I started from Monument Valley
on the 20th of August. I came to
Tuba City, then to Flagstaff. I
spent the night riding on the Grey
hound Bus. It stopped at Las Vegas
at 5 a.m. I ate breakfast there, then
got on the bus again. I got to Che
mawa Indian School at 5:30 p.m. I
saw many other stsudents as I got
off the bus. They all seemed happy.
I was too tired to foe happy. It was
real nice seeing my friends again.

This is my first year at Chemawa
Indian School. I like the school
very much. I did not know many
things about Chemawa until I came
here Jbut I like it even better than
any other school that I have gone
to.
We students, had a nice trip
from Chinle, Arizona, to Chemawa,
Oregon. It was a long trip but we
had lots of fun on the trip. I en
joyed it all very much.

This is my first time in Che
mawa. I had some fun on my trip
to Chemawa as I met some nice
people. Chemawa is a nice place to
stay but Chemawa is a hot place.
I like Chemawa. In Chemawa we
play basketball and football. It is
fun to play those games.

The trip to Chemawa was just
fine but it was long and tiresome.
We started the trip to Chemawa
from Arizona.
After we had ridden a long ways,
boy! I got so tired of sitting I felt
like taking a long walk. I looked
at my friend sitting beside me and
there she was just sleeping away.
I could not sleep but I guess it was
because my seat mate was taking
all the Space and leaning against
me.
I was tired of being leaned on
and I thought that it was my turn
to sleep and lean against my friend.
From then on we took turns and
kept on doing it the rest of the
trip. Soon we were passing Salem,
Oregon, and everyone was so hap
py. I was still tired and lazy. The
other boys and girls were jumping
up and down and making noise but
still I did not feel like jumping or
singing until my friend, Faye, be
gan and then I joined in, too. We
were all so happy to see Chemawa
again.
