GRADUAT ES SPEAK
TEAM MATES
Today is a happy day and a sad
day for us. It is happy because we
are starting on our life’s work, but
we feel sad to leave our happy
home, Chertiawa.
. This day, this year, is an event
ful one for this graduating class.
It has proved an exciting year for
you and all the people of the Unit
ed States. We watched pages of
history being written as we watch
ed Astronaut John H. Glenn circle
the earth. We heard him tell of see
ing four sunsets in four hours. Pos
sibly, in years to come, this will
be a commonplace event for you
and me to witness four sunsets.
Colonel Glenn felt humble in relat
ing anything about the deed he had
accomplished. I feel proud, as so
many Americans do, to quote only
a few of this great man’s words. Do
you remember, when he told while
making his flight, how he could
park a camera in the air until he
needed it again? It is well to re
member that Astronaut Glenn said,
“Knowledge begets knowledge;
there are tremendous things to be
learned by man. The country and
the world stand on the verge of a
new era.” Whenever Lt. Colonel
Glenn spoke, he always remained
humble. In all of his speeches he
kept saying “us” and “we.” His
feat was accomplished With the
teamwork of many people, yet he
didn’t forget to mention his par
ents who gave him the gift of life.
We know it is the hope and wish
of our teachers, parents, and friends
that we, too, may accomplish a
great deal. We can’t all be heroes
with headlines announcing our out
standing deeds, but we can be un
sung heroes. We can be good work
ers in any field we are trained, We
can be good mechanics. We can
help build bridges. We can weld
the wing of an airplane or help
make a part of a missile. We can
gain knowledge by reading, ob
serving, going to night school or
trade school. We can find happiness
and security in our work.
We are part of a great team. We
are citiens of the United States of
America. We can .be a good team-
mate or a poor teammate of this
great country. It is up to us. Let
me quote our motto, “Give g the
World the Best You have and the
Best Will Come Back to You.” This
could easily have been Astronaut
Glenn’s motto, and also our Goal in
Life1. Thank you.

NEW FRONTIERS FOR US
I was happy to have been select
ed to talk at this time. It is also
true at this time, this minute, I
probably would be happier sitting
where you are, and one of you
would be standing where I am now
doing the talking.
My subject is New Frontiers.
When I first thought of new fron
tiers, I thought of wagons pushing
west, women fighting for the right
to vote. Then, I stopped to think
again.
In a small way, we, all the stu
dents at Chemawa crossed a new
frontier when we left opr homes
to come to school. When we and
our parents made the decision that
we were to come, it took courage
on our part: It took a desire to
learn. It took courage to stay the
first few weeks even though every
one was kind to its;
Here at Chemawa we have learn
ed a new language, developed new
skills, and have become acquainted
with a new culture so we can take
our place in the outside world.
Perhaps some of us will go home
but we will carry with us new ideas
and a message to bur people that
the world is Changing. We will car
ry the idea that there is a great
need for education. The fact is that
the need for education is great, if
we want to become self-supporting
people and enter the competitive
world. The world needs doctors,
but it also needs welders. The
world needs teachers, but it also
needs nurses’ aids.
This graduation is only a, very
small beginning in the New Fron
tiers we will cross. It is only a be
ginning in our education. Whatever
we choose to do or wherever we go,
we will meet new people. We must
get along with them. We will see
new cities and we will meet new
friends. We /must be sure they are
good friends. We will have new
work experiences in which we must
give our best. Sometimes we may
fail but I hope we will say, “Let’s
try again.”
The world is changing. Our way
Giving Mrs. Brannon
A Program
Mrs. Brannon is our principal.
One day she asked us if we would
give a little program for a Salem
club she belongs to, Delta Kappa
Gamma. The program was Thurs
day night, March 8, at Winona Hall.
About 30 women came. Mr. and
Mrs. Penrod were guests also.
| First, the women pretended they
were students learning the Navajo
language. A few words were learn
ed. Everyone seemed to have fun
trying to say the words. Next, the
school program was explained.
Then a demonstration was given on
how English is taught to begin
ning students. Mrs. Cordell’s ¿lajs^-
gave a reading demonstration. Mrs.
Matt’s chorus sang a song. I think
the ladies really enjoyed all of it.
They said they were thrilled by the
things we did.

Up with the new trends.

humble. We will always remember
the help of the teachers in the
class rooms, shops, and dormitor
ies. We hope we can repay them by
doing and by giving the world the
best we have. By giving our best,
happiness and contentment will
come to iKfcA-
'Chemawa has been our happy
home. For all we have learned, We
are grateful, though we know we
have much more to learn.. Our.
hearts tell us we must try to de
serve the trust and faith our school
places on us.. We are now looking
reward the future with hope and
happiness? As we go on our way,
we will leave youw ith the thought
that We will cross our New Fron
tiers the best we can. We will not
forget Chemawa and what it has
done for us.
Classmates, I feel in my heart
and say it to you, “don’t ever get
¡discouraged. Give the world the
best yog have and the best will
come back to you.” Don’t forget
your dreams of what you' want to
be and do. It is up to you to make
something of yourself. Start where
you are with what you have, make
Something of it and never be sat
