McBride Has
Birthday Party
On March 31, the matrons at
McBride Hall, all of whom had
birthdays in thè preceding three
weeks, gave a birthday party for
all the girls who live in the dormi
tory.

Mrs. Faulkner, dining hall ma
tron, was a guest, and played^the
piano for the girls. A delicious
birthday cake and ice cream were
served. The girls enjoyed the party
very much.
Portland Group Visits
We had visitors from Portland.
They ,visited all the buildings at
Chemawa school. At noontime they
ate lunch in the home economics
dining room. Some of the fourth
year Navajo girls helped to, serve
the women.
In the afternoon they came into
our classroom. All the, girls were
doing something. Some of the girls
were cooking, two of them were
washing the gas stbve outside and
inside. Another two girls were
washing windows.
Some of the visitors came to our
program at assembly. We had a
short western program.

Learn English
We should always talk English
to each other .every day when S
are in the classroom or when we
are in the dining hall or in the
building. If you want to say some
thing, say it in English, not in
Navajo. If we speak English all
the time we will learn lots of
things.
When we speak English we will
get a job easily^ but when we talk
Navajo we will not"1 get a job.

Thank You
The girls of McBride Hall ate
enjoying the use of the basketball
goals, voUeybalbnets, and bulletin
board .recently put up for them by
men from the shops. They say,
“Thank you for such nice things!”
Campus Trip Combines
Business and Pleasure
Our classroom girls went io r a
walk yesterday after the boys went
to shop. Our' teacher, Miss Dora
Bender, told us the names of the
different trees and plants. Later
she asked us questions about the
new names^
We certainly enjoyed our walk,;
and we know all the trees” and
plants’ names now.
E The large cherry .orchard is
blooming. It is very beautiful, The
boys and girls here next summer
will eat the ripe cherries#*.'I wish
all of us could be here and help eat
them.
When we go to the apple orch
ard the boys are going too.

Group Presents Program
Katie Yazzie, Jane Wauneka,
and their teacher, Mr. James John
ston, were guests at a meeting of
the P. T. A. of the Mountain View
school on Friday, March 26.
Since the beginners at the school
had been studying Indians, all of
them were present at the meeting
to see some of Mr. Bramlet’s color
sfideslpf the Navajo country.
During the question and answer
sesMon following the pictures, Mr.
Johnston told the group about Che-
mawa’s O. J. T. program, and an
swered many questions pertaining
to job training for boys and girls.
’ .Cake and coffee were served
afterwards. During the refresh
ment time, Katie and Jane sang a
Navajo song. The girls wore Nava
jo costumes, and the people at
Mountain View asked them many
questions about their sflyer, shoes,
and skirts.
Visitors from Germany
I On Friday, March 26, there were
some German peopler^yi&iting our
campus. It’s rather interesting to
have people from far off countries
come to Chemawa. To Us, they
were strangers, but to them, we
were the strange ones.. They took
pidtnres of students and visited
with some of us. I believe they en7
joyed talking to us as well as to
the- employees.

Older Boys Visit
Army Reserves
Last night we went to visit the
army reserves. It ,is south of,
Salem: We could see how we liked;
it. ,
There we saw many guns. Some
army men told us how to ^use the
machine guns and how to do other
things.
After we all had doughnuts and
coffee or pop, we went to differ
ent places. AU th e; seventeen year
old boys went upstairs. I went up
there. The boys all sat down in
a classroom. A man said, “We are
going to have a test.” Some of it
was easy and some of it was too
hard.
I surely enjoyed the army re-,
serve visit.

Navajo Boys Visit
Auto Shop
Some time ago we visited auto
shop to get an idea about it.- Maybe
some of us are going to choose auto
shop for our vocational training
next year.
One of the bdys showed us
around and told us about the parts
of a car. We appreciate that..
There were’ some boys working
on cars and some were doing weld
ing.
Mr. George Speed is the instruc
tor of the auto-shop. He answered
a few'questions which we decided
to ask him. One of the things he
said' whs that you have to know
arithmetic ‘to work in shop. We
learned some interesting things.

Navajo Students Return
All Navajo students who have
been hospitalized at Tacoma Indian
Hospital for surgery, have now re*
turned to Chemawa. Kee Bahe
Lake, Maizie Blake, and Guy John
son were the last to return.
We Learn from Movies
We go to an educational show
every Tuesday'morning. We go to
thq, show at 10:8|. I learn many
things from the show. Don’t just
look at the show; learn something
from the show.
