    JEWELL SHARP TO SPELL
FOR CHEMAWA
i Jewell Sharp won f i r s t place in the fin a l spelldown held, for
Chemawa seventh arid eighth grade spellers on February 1?, and w ill
take part in the d is tr ic t contest to be held at Keizer on March 2.»
Pearl Barr placed second and Mavis Tavashee th ird .
All three g irls
are in the eighth grade. Mrs. Hazel Mason is th e ir teacher.
Since January
the Oregon Statesman, which sponsors the spelling
contest with KSLM, has published 1,000 words, - twenty each clay.
These words have been used as a basis for the spelling a c tiv itie s in
the seventh and eighth grades.
Two preliminary spelldownS Were held
to determine who were best spellers in each grade, and to acquaint
pupils with procedures and accustom them to spelling before an audience
Winners of, the d is tr ic t contests w ill compete in fin als to be
held a t Parrish Junior High School' in Salem on March 2h.
STUDENTS EARN DRIVING PERMITS
Five students in Chemawais Navajo program, on February h,
passed with flying cqlors the w ritten examination which e n title s
them to driver’s instruction permits.
Jane Badoni, Louise Benally,
Nellie John, Chester Hoskie, and Reynolds Roanhorse averaged 97
in th e ir te s t scores.

Eighteen high school seniors and juniors went to Salem on Feb­
ruary h to contribute to a blood bank for Leona Showaway, a graduate
