    VOACTIONAL ACTIVITIES
CARPENTERS MAKE INDIAN DRUMS
The carpenter shop boys, Simmer Tendoy, Sanford Azure, and
Arthur Lane, with Mr. Charles Holmes, th e ir in stru cto r, have made
two Indian drums, - one for the Indian club and one for th e'scouts.
For the drums a b arrel was cut in two, and goat hides were scraped
and prepared for the heads.
The Indian club has already put th e ir
drum to use in practicing for Chemawa’s birthday party.
I t is a very
colorful and has a good tone*
AG CUSS VISITS MEAT
PACklNG PLANT
The morning aguj culture class Went on an educational tr ip to the
Valley Packing Plant in Salem on February 8* They learned about the
meat packing processes, government inspection of meat, and the duties
of pacing plant workers*
The class saw the butchering of beef animals for packing purposes
I t Is during th is process that a government inspector vzatches with
care and inspects animals and animal organs to t e l l whether they are
f i t for >hnmap use.
The boys were impressed with the importance of
buying only government approved meat.
The class learned th at there is no loss in butchering a cow.
Everything, - brains, jowels, tongue, in te stin e s, skull, and bones,
is used for meat products or for f e r tiliz e r s .
The boys watched the workers making sausages and weiners, and
learned what goes into them.
I t was an in te restin g process.
workers have a fifte e n minute break for re s t and coffee.
