friendship Is Important
I have been thinking about
friendship. It is one of the best
things. We win friendship and it
stays with us. | |g
> •
The people from all parts of
^America should be friends, I be
lieve in it. At. Chemawa we have
a chance to make friends with the
Navajo people from the Southwest,
as well, as people from the North
west.
, Shall we hail 1954 as a friend
ship year? Let’s a^ make friends,
and it will help us on the road' to
happiness. \
Peter Reed
Our Opportunity
The Government is helping us to
go to ■ school off the "reservation.
We do not have? to pay to go to
a Government school. We do not
have to buy our supplies such as
writing paper, pencils, and other
things.
£ While we are in school we should
learn all we can. We should learh
things in the white man’s way. We
should speak' English, We should
learn so we don’t make mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes, but we
want to'improve.
Don’t waste your time and sup
plies because you are just wasting
the Government’s money.

Councilors Appointed
Never a Dull Moment
Mr. E. B. Hudson, boys’ ad
viser, appointed two house coun
cilors for McNary Hall. They are
James Switzler, leader for Unit I,
and Reynolds Roanhorse, assistant
house manager. The house council
had a meeting with Mr. Hudson^
and Mrs. Lena Cronk, home eco-
nomics department head, at which
they discussed the seating problem
of McNary and Brewer Hall boys,
in the din mg hall.
There is always something good
for each boy to do in McNary Hall.
Of the games,—card games, ping
pong, checkers, Chinese checkers,
etc,, card games are the favorites,
judging' by the need for replace
ment.
Some of the boys take it easy in
their rooms, listening to their ra
dios, or to records someone has
bought, -<
Reading, or writing letters are pas
times. Boys who are free from
washing or ironing their clothes,
watch television.
The boys participate in intra
murals on Tuesday and Thursday
nights.
Happy Birthday to You
Many “Happy Birthday’s” are
sung and many spankings given
when someone in Winona Hall has
a birthday. On January 12, Evelyn
Lloyd was the victim. Some of the
girls -got together and gave her a
little surprise party; They played
games and danced. A beautiful
birthday cake was presented, and
served with punch, for refresh
ments.
At the Half
At the half in a basketball game,
the team and the coach get to
gether. They talk over their mis
takes of the first half and plan how
to improve their play in the second
half.
Let us more orless pretend that
in going to- school we are playing
an important game. We are. now
at the half. It is :a good idea to
think about how we might improve
in the last half, and listen to the
advice of our coaches,
There are many things that need
improvement at Chemawa. All stu
dents know what they are,—dining
hall conduct, socialing. conduct,
care ' .of property, attention to
school work, etc., If we heed advice
and try our best to succeed in im
proving, this may prove to be a
winning year.

Boy Scouts Enjoy
Portland Trip
The Mitchell Hall boys who are
scouts, went on a trip to Portland.
We went to the zoo in Portland.
We saw many animals. There were
lions, monkeys, bears, and many
kinds of birds. It was fun to watch
the polar bears> and feed peanuts
to the monkey s. .
We cooked our lunch and sup
per ourselves. We cooked our
lunch in the park where the zoo is,
When it was supper time we found
another park where we cooked our
steak. We like to cook and eat in
the open.
We went to a building called
The House of Oregon. We saw
many old things. There was a big
picture of Custer’s Last Stand.
We went up on Rocky Butté
above Hill Military Academy. We
could see a long distance from
there.
We are glad to be scouts. We
learn to do useful things and we
have good times together.
Thank Yo>u, Boys
Boys who helped in decorating
the boys’ dormitories, trimming the
trees, and wrapping gifts for all the
boys at Chemawa, were Charles
Farmer and Randolph Wilson of
McNary Hall, and Herbert Pe,vo,
Everett Capps, and Frank White
Eagle of Brewer Hall.
