SCHOOL BELLS RING
The school y e a r 1952-53 got u n d er
w a y in record m anner, Little tim e
w a s n e e d e d to orien tate the new
stu dents a n d re a c q u a in t th e old. A
g e n e ra l assem b ly on S eptem ber 11,
g a v e the students a n opportunity to
h e a r Mr. Holm express his attitude
a n d desires for m aking this a p le a s
ant, active y e a r for stu d en ts a n d '
em ployees alike. The im provem ents
m a d e over the entire cam pus during
the sum m er a re proving to b e in cen
tives for the kind of conduct th at
new furnishings require if they are
to rem ain attractive.
There a re 295 girls a n d 313 boys
enrolled this y e a r a n d from all a p
pearances,, the m ajority a re w ell
ad ju ste d a n d actively p articipating
in the life th a t is theirs in their new
hom e here a t C hem aw a.
"Operation Bean Picking"
The se a so n h arvests give j m any
C h em aw a stu d en ts a source of
sp en d in g m oney. It's not. a ll work
a s can b e seen b y this enthusiastic
group w ho a re on "O peration Bean
Picking." From the m iddle of the
sum m er until w ell into the fall, or
gan ized groups of students u n d er the
supervision of their teach ers go into
the b e a n or berry fields a n d the nut
groves. The current picking is in
the filbert groves w here the la st sev
eral w eeks am bitious classes, could
b e found vying w ith e a c h other for
a record pick a n d ad d in g cash to
their c la ss coffers.
BAND ORGANIZES
FIRST MEETING OF NFFE
Mr. M att prom ises us ano th er y ear
of spirited m usic a t our athletic
events a n d p le a sa n t listening a t the
concerts. M any new students h av e
enrolled in the school to fill the
chairs left v a c a n t in the b a n d by
g ra d u a te s. This y ear, sectional re
h e a rsa ls a re b e in g held. Mr. Shep
a rd is assistin g the re e d departm ent;
Mr. Sipes, the trom bone section a n d
Mr. M att h as the b ra ss section. The
b a n d h as b e e n enriched w ith the
ad dition of a S ousaphone a n d a
Scotch, b a ss drum this year.
The b a n d is resp o n sib le for p la y
ing at all hom e football a n d b a sk e t
ball gam es. They p resen t a n n u a l
spring a n d fall concerts.

'each, appearance,.
The officers of the. NFFE, Local 241,
for the current y e a r h a d ch a rg e of
the first m eeting held this y ear. The
officers are: Mr. Joseph Brush, presi
dent; Mr. C harles Holmes, vice-presi
dent; Miss A lberta C hallis, treasurer;
and, Miss H elen Gordon, secretary.
For their initial m ixer-m eeting, they
w ere a ssiste d b y Mrs,. Edith H ow ard
a n d Mrs. G rayce Burley.

SPELLING CONTEST
Plans for the a n n u a l KSLM sp o n
sored spelling contest h a v e b e e n
announced. The contest is open to
the m em bers of 1 the 7th a n d 8th
g ra d e s of M arion, Polk a n d Southern
Yamhill counties. S tudents from
Mrs. H ackett's a n d Mrs. Burke's
classes will com pete to decide the
stu dents w ho will rep resen t C he
m a w a a t the district contest. District
winners a re eligible to the county
finals.
Last y ear, F rances McGriff re p re
sented us a t Keizer w here she
p laced second a n d thus was entitled
to enter the finals a t Salem . A lthough
F rances did not w in there, she did
w ith stan d nine rounds of spellers.

e a g e r to b e a p art of the fine pro
gram th a t is afforded the p artici
pants.
