The Chemawa American
SPORTS REVIEW
victory over the Salem Sophomores.
This game saw the score tied at 52
all with but 20 seconds to go. Bill
Shillal taking cool aim fired a two-
pointer from 40 feet out that gave us
the win 54-52. Our league finish
showed us as having 7 wins and 9
losses.
In the county tournament at Stay
ton we had the ill-fortune to draw
Gates in the first round of play. How
ever, the boys played hard and the
game saw Gates victorius by a
score of 53-45. Bad free shooting
hindered us considerably and but
for that we may have fared better.
FOOTBALL
The football team at Chemawa en
joyed a very lackluster season as
far as wins and losses go. The team
played a total of seven games, los
ing six and winning one. The seas
on started poorly when we went to
Silverton Sept. 12 and were soundly
beaten 41-0. Next we traveled to
Stayton losing there by a score of
27-2. The following Friday we jour
neyed to Mill City and with the girls
watching and cheering, Cliff Case
kicked an all important point for a
13-12 win. This proved to be the
only successful venture, the follow
ing Fridays being a series of losses.
First to Jefferson 47-6, then Sublimity
26-12, then Gervais 28-0, and finally
the Salem J. V's 35-0.
BASKETBALL
BASEBALL
Chemawa's bats and gloves came
out of moth balls early in March in
preparation for our first league en
counter with Gervais. Our early sea
son preparedness was not enough
however and they topped us by a
score of 8-0. We then journeyed to
Gates and battled them at Mill City.
We still weren't fully prepared be
cause we took it on the chin 9-2. The
following Tuesday saw us at home
and our opponent was Jefferson.
Blasting out a ten-hit attack, and
getting some fine pitching we
grabbed out first league win 8-3.
Our next opponent was St. Paul
whom we handily walloped 17-6.
Detroit then came to Chemawa, and
with Pat Marin chucking a one hit
ter we were victorious 10-0. The
following Friday we traveled to Mill
City for a night game which saw us
revert to early season form and lose
11-4. In the final game of the season
we whipped Sublimity 11-3.
Chemawa basketeers hit the court
some fifty strong in the middle of
November. The first action for the
boys was the Marion ’ B league
jamboree Dec. 3. It was our fate to
again draw Gates, and in our ten
minutes of playing time we lost by
a score of 14-10.
The regular season started with
Falls City as our opponent. We trav
eled io the Mountaineer's gym and
lost 49-43. They came down to our
place next and beat us again 35-20.

WE ARE LEAVING EARLY
Our school will soon be closed for
we have reached the end of another
school year We will all be going
home in a short time. The Navajo
students are leaving early because
we started school on Sept. 4. The
students in the regular program did
not begin their school work until
Sept. 10, so we will be the first ones
to leave for home.
I want to mention a few things
about the wonderful time we have
had in our school activities during
this past year. We have had many
fine movies, parties, sports, and
other things. We have enjoyed all
our school activities and we have
made lots of friends among the reg
ular students. We don't like to leave
them, but we must return to our
homes for a short while. We also
are sorry we are not going to be
here on May 16th. We wish we
could stay for another week and see
the graduation exercises, for we
know the Class of '52 will have a
grand time on that day. Of course,
we know we are going to be glad
to see our folk again and have a
good time with them.
Good-bye, until next September.
—Forrest Adison.
ALL STATE
Two boys, Chuck Sampson and
Rodney Davis, from The Chemawa
Indian School, have been picked to
play an All State football game at
Pendleton, Oregon, on August 30th.
The players have been chosen
from the graduating classes of '52.
One squad will represent east of the
Cascades and one squad Western
Oregon.
BAND
On February 15th the members of
the Chemawa band went to the Sa
lem high school auditorium to hear
Rafael Mendez, the world's greatest
trumpet player. After hearing him
it gave us a new goal which we will
all try to reach. Everyone enjoyed
Rafael Mendez's playing.
