HOME LIVING
WINONA HALL NEWS
Did some one mention cakes
around Winona hall? They sure did
because Rooms 4, 22, 43, 34 and 19
were the rooms with the most votes
for Winona hall Open House which
was the big event in the dormitory
this month. The House Council gave
cakes for the prizes. The best 2-bed
room was Room 4, Imogene Wash
ington and Margaret Sampson; best
room in south hall upstairs was 43,
Norma Jefferson, Lucy Begaye, Agnes
Noble, Lula Boonie, Mary K. James,
Dorothy Peter and Mary Ann Willie;
the best room in north hall upstairs
was 34, Jane Bedoni, Lillie Bitsilly,
Fannie Rose Smith, Mattie Johnson,
Lorraine Tom; best room in north hall
downstairs 22, Roberta McDevitt,
Eloise Butler, Patricia Carlson and
Nettie Racine and the best Council
lor's room 19, Mary Lane and Ida
Jean McCash.
The rooms weren't the only spic
and span places, the whole building
really shined. All the girls really
"pitched in" and got the building
clean and dressed up which we were
all proud of.
The dinette really
looked pretty with the candles and
bouquet of daffodils as a center
piece. Oh, we must not forget those
nice cookies that the Home Ec girls
made for Open House, and the punch
made by the kitchen girls. They
were very good. So we had another
successful Open House, thanks to all
the girls and our many guests.
Winona hall was really a busy
place during Chemawa Birthday
time.
The girls practicing their
dances, getting their costumes ready
and visiting with their families who
came for the Bir^h^ay celebration.
We were glad to have the Fvles,
Showaways, Lanes, Browns and Bar
bara Gibbons and sisters. The girls
are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Show-
away, parents of Leona, for bringing
so many cosutmes and helping to
make Chemawa's program so suc
cessful; to show their appreciation
the girls gave them a towel set be
fore they left for home.
We're glad to have Lorraine Farm
er and Winnie Foster back with us
after being off the campus due to
family illness.
The girls are buying or making
square dance skirts to wear at the
regular weekly meeting of the
Square Dance club held each Wed
nesday.
Ida Jean McCash and her Unit IV
won the Unit Award trip for Febru
ary. Along with McBride hall girls
who were outstanding in citizenship,
they went to the movies in Salem
last Saturday afternoon and really
had a good time.
Lucetta Hahn and Peggy Washing
ton are the faithful two who see that
the pop corn is popped and sacked
each week for pop corn sale.
We appreciate Mrs. Seawright
coming this month for a health in
spection of the girls. Dr. Stone comes
each month and rates our dormitory
very good. We want to keep it that
way.
For Intramural the girls are play
ing off a basketball tournament each
Thursday evening. There are seven
teams- Watcha-call-its (Nancy Sam
uel, Capt); Thunder Birds (Auaus-
t’^e Phillips, Cant); The Things
(Eleanor Foster, Capt.); Hazel Nuts
(Hazel Poog, Capt.);
Wild Cats
(Georgia Lucei, Capt.); Papooses
(Sa-ah Lewis. Capt.); Panthers (Mar-
jie Tattoed, Capt.). As it looks now
the winning team mav either be the
Hazel Nuts or the Panthers but any
thing might happen as the other
t^ams are reallv trvma for that party
♦hat is waiting for the vanning team.
Mav the best team win!
Mary Lane and Nancy Butler se
lected some new dance records for
winona hall and purchased them
Saturday. They can be used for the
r,-iday night dances a’so.—Sarah
T ewis and Geraldine P^t^rson, News
Reporters for Winona hall.
McBRIDE HALL
On the day of Washington's Birth-
dav the McBride House officers vrere
invited to Winona hall for Open

'■'as so hard to decide which rro^

DOWN ON THE FARM
The farm boys have been -kept
busy repairing windows, pipes and
equipment.
Mr. Starlin has started the boys on
some new projects which include
plumbing and some glazing. Other
projects which have been completed
included making of rat traps, lawn
chairs, tool cabinet, book ends, and
waste paper baskets.
Some of the farm boys went to
Salem to take the driver's test. Three
of the boys, William Shillal, Donald
James and Pupert Halfmoon, passed
the test and some were allowed a
permit to drive.
While we were sorry to have Mr.
O'Brien leave us we welcome Mr. H.
W. Starlin who came from Alaska to
join us here at Chemawa.
Mr. Rassmussen from the Marion
County agent's office demonstrated
the right and wrong way to nrune
trees. We will soon start pruning
the trees in the orchard.
The Navajo boys have been doing
some pruning of trees, repairing
farm equipment, and remodeling the
machine shop. They have also been
doing some tractor driving.
The farm boys have formed an Ag
club. At present it has a member
ship of 16 boys from 10th to 12th
grades. They have had two meet
ings, holding them every other
Thursday night.
These boys are
looking forward to an Ag party and
dance, the annual open house and
the barbeque which will be heid as
usual this spring.
beginning, the party lasted for about
an hour. It is fun to have parties.
The McBride hall girls helped cele
brate Chemawa's birthday with the
seventh and eighth grade girls from
McBride hall singing in the chorus
and the first, second, third and fourth
groups sitting downstairs near the
visitors. The girls from the seventh
groin on down came back to the
budding for the delicious birthday
cake and punch.
The McBride hall house officers
have regular council meetings. Chris
tine Thompson is president and La-
verua Johnson is secretary, the other
members are Shirley Tchn'ev, Marie
Rart, Ma-tha Clark and Carolyn Mil
lett. They are warding the group
which has been the best citizens for
a month by giving them a party.
