McNARY HALL HAPPENINGS
There are m an y new faces am ong
the boys living a t McNary hall this
year. They come from M ontana,
W ashington, Idaho, California, O re
gon, Arizona, New Mexico, a n d A las
ka. Every room is occupied. W e are
h a p p y to w elcom e the new students.
There is a special N avajo unit in
McNary.

They a re now b ack in school.
W e are gettin g a n intram ural fight
card on T hanksgiving evening. We
h a d a show in the gym on Armistice
night. Everyone seem ed to enjoy the
m atches.

IN CIRCULATION
After several y e a rs of retirem ent,
McBride Hall, ren o v ated a n d refur
b ish ed this sum m er by contract p a in t
ers a n d C hem aw a shop m en a n d e n
gineers, is a g a in serving a s a girls
dormitory. The building is occupied
this y e a r by the little girls from the
g ra d e school.

The school b a n d students a re h ard
a t work, u nder the direction of Mr.
V incent J. Matt.
They are busy
blow ing scales a n d doing other work
a n d hope to m ake a public a p p e a r
a n ce a s a group a b o u t D ecem ber 23
a t a n assem bly. There are 34 on the
b a n d roster. They practice four times
a w eek a n d the b a n d room is . open
every evening ;for those w ishing to
practice.
NEW STOVES RECEIVED
On Fire Drills
Four new stoves a re b e in g in
stalled on the cam pus, rep lacin g a
like num ber in use at C h em aw a for
lo these m any years. Three a re go
ing into the stu d en ts' kitchen a n d the
fourth into the teach ers' club.
Fire Drills a re im portant b e c a u se
w hen a re a l fire comes, people will
p ro b ab ly g et panicky. Some of the
p eople a re b o u n d to get knocked
dow n a n d tram pled on. People of all
a g e s n e e d fire drills—even grow nup
people. I re a d in the p a p e r w here
fifteen people w ere killed w hen a
night club cau g h t fire.
Some people m ay g et a n g ry w hen
you tell them there is a fire drill. Bui
it is for their own good. I know b e
c a u se w hen I w as five or six our
church started to burn. Everyone
started for the door, but our S unday
School teach er m ad e them line up.
Even the grow nups started to run
b u t she told them to line up.
Soon the G rade School will have
fire drills. Let's all do our p art well

CARNIVAL ENJOYED
The big all-school carn iv al held in
the gym O ctober 29 w as en joyed by
old a n d young. Door prizes, cake
raffle, bingo, g am es of all kinds, the
ever-popular fish pond, eats, movie
theater, jitney d an ce, all the favorite
old concessions a n d some new , con
tributed to a lively H allow e'en party.
The fire station is now at the
School Garage Building, south of
the shops.

Mr. A ndy A skan is a n interpreter
w ho works w ith the N avajo a n d
com es from W indow Rock, Arizona.
Mr. C. E. Burnette, stu d en t adviser,
is a transfer from A laska a n d is s ta
tioned in Brewer Hall. Mrs. Burnett
is one of the teachers for the N avajo
students.
Mr. John Begay, teacher-interpreter
teach es in the N avajo program a n d
comes from W indow Rock, Arizona.
Mrs. Bernice Brown, also a te a c h
er-interpreter for the N avajo, w as
transferred from W indow Rock, Ariz.

Mr. V incent J. Matt, b a n d "and
w oodw orking instructor, comes from
Dixon, M ontana.
Mr. a n d Mrs. A. J. Frisby, new
cooks at the em ployees' club, a re
from Rosebud, South D akota.

dents.
Mr. R ichard M. McKee of G rand
Ronde, O regon, is the new lau ndry
m an.
Mrs. V. C. Hill, an o th er te a c h e r of
the N avajo students, is from Salem .
Mrs. G race L. Remy of Salem suc
ceeds Miss Dorw eiler (transferred to
F landreau) .as se c re ta ry in the p rin
cip al's office.
