News Notes
Joe Pete, former Chemawa student, was a campus
visitor. Joe is in the air corps.
Word has been received that Gilbert Towner, former
student, has joined the Marines and is located at San
Diego, Calif.
Florence Ingawanup's unit II won the unit awards
for this period. This is the second time this unit has
won this year. The prize was a trip to Salem to a
show.
In our story last issue telling of Mr. J. S. Kunkel's
gift to the small children of the school our report was
only half right. Mr. Kunkel increased the kids' Christ
mas fun by $10 and not $5 as we reported.
The Brewer hall girls are organized in groups ac
cording to grades. These groups are working to keep
the hall neat and to have good conduct. The group
leader, June Richards, helps the house councilor.
THE VALUE OF AN EDUCATION
Education is the back-bone of living. Without it we
are like fish in a desert, camels in the sea. In other
words, we are lost.
What becomes of one when he is uneducated? Is it
possible to lead a normal life? Seemingly the average
individual cannot lead either a normal or happy life
when they lack abundant education.
About ninety percent of our prison inmates are men
who didn't have any schooling. They took to ways of
crime when no decent job, due to their lack of educa
tion, could be found.
We will all make better American citizens if we have
a high school and college education, as school teach
es us the proper way of American living. Yes, as to
the value of an education there is no end. Get yours
now while the opportunity is here.—Dawn Andrews.
JUNIORS HAVE PARTY
The Juniors had a pre-Christmas party December 24
in their classroom.
The game, "Cootie," furnished entertainment for the
group. Delores Racehorse won first prize. A delicious
lunch was served.
CAN YOU TOP THIS?
The eighth graders hold the top honors in the con
tributions to the tuberculosis fund drive. Their total
donation was $9.69.
I like to read books all the time in school. We learn
to read out of books. Our teacher helps us to read
books. I like the new children that come in. I like the
matrons, too. We like our pig, "Blossom Rose." I like
the teacher too. I like to look at pictures. I am in the

Basketball Review
The lineup on the Varsity team is as follows, "A"
squad: Delford Crain, Robert Kutch, forwards; Richard
Hillaire, center; Dilton Switzler, Edward Henry, guards;
subs, Vernon Lane, George Cagey, Reginald Wells,
William Belgard.
Vic Jackson and Buddy Kalama became eligible in the
second semester and were welcomed back to the squad.
ALL-STARS ORGANIZED
The Chemawa "All-Stars" basketball team is com
posed of seven players who are not eligible for the
Varsity team. They are Victor Jackson, Melvin Eagle
man, Levi George, Fred Kalama, Omer Winishut, Na
thaniel Baker and Joe Pinkham.
The team's scores to date are as follows:
All Stars 76, Central Lutheran 32.
All Stars 8, C. I. S. Varsity 6 (one quarter).
All Stars 63, C. I. S. B 25.

BOXERS LOSE
Dec. 30 the boxing squad lost to Yakima boxers, 4-3,
with Dave Shellal winning the main event by T.K.O.
in third round. He defeated the pride of the Yakima
club. Other winners were Carrol Ginsaw, Curtis Sta-
cona. L. J. Hunt, coach of Yakima, said, "Chemawa
fighters are the finest sportsmen and boxers we've
ever met."
January 14 the boxing squad journeyed to Eugene
only to lose six out of eight bouts. In the main event
Melvin Eagleman lost a close decision to Denny
Quinn. Dav^d Snedal and Louis Belgard won their bouts
for Chemawa.
Dr. Leslie L. Stone, contract physician, his family
and Dr. Cissler have taken up their residence on the
campus.
