Welcome Dance First Social Event
A welcome dance for the students and sponsored
by the administrative staff, was given Friday, Sept. 26,
at the school gymnasuim.
The gym was decorated with a large "Welcome”
sign at the far end of the hall. Music was supplied
by a Salem orcrestra.
Welcome dances are old customs here at Che-
mawa. They are given at the beginning of each
school year so the students ami employees will
have a chance to become acquainted with each other.
Winona Blossoms Under Unit Plan
Winona hall, the dormitory for the sixth to twelfth
grade girls, has been right “on the ball” since thev
started the unit system.
There are eight units with a house councillor for
for each. The councillors for this period are Flor
ence Ingawanup, unit one: Ernestine Lane, unit two;
Velma McLeod, unit three; Marcelene Gensaw, unit
four; Delores Racehorse, unit five; Jean Halfmoon,
unit six; Phyllis Miller, unit seven; and Freda Bent,
unit eight.
Elie units are having stiff competition with each
other. There are 26 possible points a normal day
which are given for such things as promptness, room
appearance, and bed check.
Unit eight won for the first four weeks, and their
reward was a free movie in Salem on October 21st.
The runner-up was unit one.
Parties are Highlights
The Winona hall open-air tennis court was the
setting of the senior high party held Oct. 24. ( It
just happened to be one of the three raiidess days
for the month.)
Music was supplied by Mr. Jack Kizziab, who
brought his record player and loud speaker.
Grades 6 to 9 held their party in the gym. Al
though the amplifiers quit during the Virginia reel,
the group enjoyed themselves playing games.
The Halls Get New Furniture
This year started out with pleasant changes in the
buildings. New furniture had been put in them.
The new beds, bureaus, and chairs make the rooms
very “homey.” 1 hey are Navy surplus material and
were first brought in for use bv the summer school
students.
Farewell for the Evans and Tiradors
Supt. and Mrs. Myrthus Evans and Dr. and Mrs.
P. A. Tirador were honored at a farewell party in the
gymnasium by the employees and representatives of
the student body on October 9.
Acting as master-of-ceremonies was Mr. Wright
Noel. Student soloists were Richard Hillaire, with
guitar accompaniment; Marion Placid, accompanied
by Nathaniel Baker on the guitar; and Clarence Hunt
er, with Miss Sylvia Dorweiler at the piano.
A quartet — Bernita Hayward. Velma McLeod, Flo
rence Ligawanup, and Ernestine Lane— also sang.
Other entertainers were Miss Jessie O Tn m. with
two readings in Italian dialect: Mrs. Wright Noel,
with an “Arizona” poem; and Mary Dorweiler, who
presented two Spanish dances in costume.
The gifts from the student body were presented by
Mayor Glen Biown and Vice Mayor Ernestine Lane.
Spokesman for the employees was Mr. Stanley Poch.
Dining Hall Becomes Cafeteria
The students dining hall looks 'ery attractive with
the brightly colored chair back covers and the new
tops on the tables, plastic with metal trim.
The food is served cafeteria style so that it is hot
and more appetizing.
Vacations
The Chemawa employees scattered in several
directions for their summer vacations.
To the Southwest went:
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Mason, who visited the Indian
schools in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Ashcutt and Mr. and Mrs.
George Reifel, who stopped at Gallup, New Mexico.
Mrs. Nell V. Brannon, who attended her daughter’s
graduation at Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Miss Beatrice Morse with her sister in San Fran
cisco.
Then to the East traveled:
Miss Sylvia Dorweiler for her daughter’s gradua
tion in Manakata, Minn., and on to Washington, D. C.
Miss Alberta Challis, by plane, to Belle Fourche,
South Dakota, the home of her parents.
Mrs. Edith Howard, who stopped at points in
Montana and North Dakota.
Miss Jeanette Goings, who visited her family in
Spokane, Washington.
Miss Marjory Olson, with her parents in Pateros,
Washington.
