Alaskans Give Concert
On Feb. 8 the Duncan Memorial church choir,
from Metlakatla, Alaska, rendered a conceit at the
Chemawa auditorium. They traveled all along the
Pacific coast of the United States.
Dr. Kohlsted is chairman of the choir. Reverend
Frederick C. Schmidt, who has been pastor of this
church for nine years, was accompanying the choir
on their trip.
Juniors and Senior Confer on Plans
For the past Lw weeks the Juniors and Seniors
have been having individual conferences with mem
bers of the guidance committee. These conferences
are for the purpose of getting students to thinking
and planning on what they wish to do after they
leave Chemawa.
Many of the students have some good plans lor
the future, w hile some do not have any definite plans,
rhe confrences helped these students to get started
planning. The conferences were both pleasant and
interesting.
Hospital News
Dr. Tirador, in his last sanitary inspection, re
ported he found McBride hall very neat and clean.
He said the little girls were making their beds
very nicely and putting the bedspreads on. He was
really proud of the little girls and their matrons.
Dr. Tirador requests that the Doys and girls stay
on the sidewalks when coming to the hospital. This
will help to keep the hospital clean.
Practice House
Mr. and Mrs. Ray V. Haldane
rhe choir is under the direction of Raymond V.
Haldane, a Chemawa graduate and a former stu
dent of Willamette University. Mrs. Lillian Buchert
is the organist. Many of the choir members are
former students of Chemawa.
They opened the concert by singing the "Lord’s
Prayer;” anti followed with these songs; "Holy Art
Thou,” "Sanctus,” "Gloria,” "Beautiful Savior” and
the "Hallelujah Chorus”. Mrs. Rjy Haldane, the
director's wife, and Mrs. Laura Adams sang a duet,
"Come Savior Come.” Miss Verna Evans, soprano
soloist, sang "Ave Maria”. Ray Haldane sang "The
Lost Chord” and 'Bells of the Sea” accompanied
by his former music teacher. Mrs. Gertrude Tourney.
This concert was dedicated to her.
A reception was given for the guests, employees
and all the Alaskan students after the concert.
Returning after a very successful tour the choir
stopped at Chemawa for a brief rest before contin
uing their homeward journey.
On our tour the reporters called on girls in the
practice house. The Freshman practice house is the
only one in operation at present but the Junior girls
hope to be living in their house soon.
The Freshman practice house contains two rooms,
a kitchen and combination living and bed room. It
is neatly furnished. It resembles a rural home with
out modern conveniences.
Four girls live in the practice house at one time.
They take care of the house, yard and chickens. To
make rural life complete there should be a cow, but
rhe girls say they hope there won’t be as none of
them know how to milk.
If Miss Goings, their instructor, considers the girls
have done well in their duties, they are rewarded
by being allowed to invite guests to dinner.
Reginald Tulee and Levi Wilson tried for the
Pepsi Cola Scholarship award in a test given Feb.
14 We hope the results are gratifing to the boys.
The Seniors have been studying geometric figures
in Math. They have made some very intricate de-
signes using T-squares, compasses and protractors.
