Commencement 1946
The 1946 .Eradication Exercises at C hem aw a offered
in its complete outlay quite a festive week. Beginning
the colorful chain of events w as the Junior-Senior prom
of Friday, May 17. A small orchestra tuned d anceable
varieties the evening through a n d the prim couples
m ade the most of this m usical occasion in the "Rose
G arden," designed by the m em bers of the Junior class.
Then a w eek later, on Sunday evening, M ay 26, a
moving b a c calau reate service w as conducted by Rev.
Dudley Strain of Salem 's First Christian church. His
subject, "W indows a n d Lions," w as an applicable
an alo g y to the soul an d temptation. Rev. Strain
stressed the need for keeping the window of the soul
open to the light of a strongly proclaim ed faith despite
the tem ptation to fall before the world's ridicule an d
disdain.
The Jolly-Up a n d Farew ell Assembly of May 29 w as
an afternoon of recognition an d aw ards. Mr. Aaron
presided as m aster of cerem onies an d the student
stand-outs in all phases of cam pus life w ere duly a c
claim ed a n d rew arded.
On the morning of May 30, an honor g u ard of the
U. S. Army cam e from Salem to provide a proper
Memorial Day salute. The C hem aw a boy scouts tended
the flag raising a n d lowering a n d Mr. Larsen spoke
appropriately for the occasion. Sgt. W ausika H auser
w as in charge of C hem aw a’s contingent of w ar veter
ans. Rev. Wilcox an d Fr. Rodakowski w ere present to
le a d the spiritual part of the program, an d a prayer
w as also offered by Ernest Spencer, C hem aw a student-
veteran. Mrs. Brannon accepted the memorial w reath
presented by Robert Eickmeyer which w as placed at
the b a se of the flag pole. The sounding of "Taps" con
cluded the ceremonies. Memorial Day afternoon w as
colored with track an d field events a n d the early eve
ning w as devoted to an all-out cam pus picnic.
The finale—graduation! The seniors' formal farewell
