joys reading books by Cur wood. To Dave we
wish much success.
It was on the warm summer day of July 16,
1922, in Inchelium, Washington, that plump
little “Chris” took her first quiet gaze upon the
world. As she grew, Christine Covington or
“Chris” became a quiet but friendly person, and
in a few years, proved to be very studious. She
went to school in Inchelium for ten long years,
and in all that time she kept hearing about
Chemawa, and its wonderful opportunities.
Then in her junior year, she packed her little
bag and flew down here with the “birds.” Her
reason for coming ?— to get a better education,
and look for a “certain species of birds.”
Since then, Christine has proved herself a good
worker, and a friend to all. “Chris’” highest
ambition is to be a private secretary, so she is
taking a commercial course this year, in the hopes
of fulfilling her ambition. She is faithful to
studies, and devotes much time to them.
But like the rest of us, she has her hours of
pleasure and hobbies. “Chris” greatly enjoys
working crossword puzzles, reading good books,
and eating toasted sandwiches. Christine finds
much pleasure in traveling and some day hopes
to climb the Alps in Switzerland so she can yodel
till her hearts contend, and maybe meet “him,”
(as she says he is a Swiss boy).
For sports activities, “Chris” prefers hiking
and swimming, but says she enjoys watching
basketball and baseball games.
Because Christine is an industrious girl, and
never leaves a task unfinished, we know she will
surely succeed. We all express our best wishes
to “Chris” in reaching her goal in life.
Dave Halfmoon, who was born in the “Round
Up City” Pendleton, Oregon, in the early ‘20’s,
now likes, above all to hunt and fish. Dave at
tended school in Pendleton, in the St. Andrews,
and the St. Joseph’s Academy before entering
Chemawa.
For Chemawa, he has played baseball for two
years, and football one year. He earned letters
in both, He is in the Lettermen’s Club, the Hi
king Club, and the C.Y.O. He is now taking
carpentry, but wants to become a forester. He en
It was in the beginning of spring, March 5,
1923, that Leslie Brendible came into this wide
world of ours. Leslie learned his A. B. C’s in the
grammar school at Metlakatla, Alaska. A few
years before coming to Chemawa he attended the
Sheldon Jackson Mission School at Sitka, Alaska.
His favorite sport is basketball. This year he
played the center position on our varsity. This
is his second year participating in track as he
is now our most outstanding high jumper. For
entertainment he likes watching movies packed
with thrills and seeing exciting football games.
This being Leslie’s second year at Chemawa,
he is studying to become a successful printer.
He is still undecided as whether he should fur
ther his education in a college or a university,
but which ever he goes to we wish him much luck.
George Sloan, alias “Scrooge,” was born on
June 17, 1921, in Ronan, Montana. He went to
school there until finishing grade school and
upon hearing of Chemawa he entered in ‘37 to
finally become a printer. He hopes someday to
become an excellent printer. He is member of
the C.Y.O , is the secretary of the McNary House
Council, and is the manager of the boxing
team. “Scrooge” likes to dance and to read
adventure stories by London. His hobby is collect
ing pennants of different states and schools. Al
though he hasn’t participated in any major sport
he enjoys watching the games. To George we
wish much happiness as he goes forth to achieve
success as a printer.
Eugene S. Booth, was born on a mid-winter
day of January 28, 1919, in a little town of Met
lakatla, Alaska.
He attended the grammar school in Metlakatla
for eight long years, and since most of his bro
thers and sisters went to school here at Chemawa
and all graduated, he decided to further his edu
cation here and to learn some kind of a vocation
so that he may earn a living in the days to come.
This is “Gene’s” fourth and final year in high
school where he is studying to be an electrician.
For entertainment “Gene” likes to fool around
with the gals, and to read a good thrilling book
on rainy day. Although he does not go in for any
kind of sports he likes to ice skate, dance, and
swim. His greatest ambition is to go to college
like his brother, Kenneth, and to become a fine
electrician. To “Gene” we hope that his ambi
tion may be fulfilled and that he may be a suc
cess as an electrician.
