4-H Club Activities

warm until they had all arrived; then they took
them to the sow, and, the fun began, for they
had to teach each pig what his first job in this
world was. They got along fine and soon every
one was contented. Elmer has watched carefully
and faithfully over this litter ever since last fall
and he will have something to show for his interest
and faithfull care. The boys now know that if
you want to save the little pigs, you should be
there when they are farrowed.
G irls S ewing C lubs
Mrs. Gilbert Pepper and Mrs. Mary James,
who have charge of the girls’ 4-H Sewing and
Home Improvement Clubs, report that their girls
are doing very fine work and plan on having
their project completed by May 23, their final
reports completed and stories written.
These clubs are planning on having competi­
tive exhibits and report books at the state fair
next fall. The quality of work that these Indian
girls are doing should place them very well up
in the classes at the fair. A local exhibit will be
held at Chemawa before school closes and all
work will be judged and ribbons awarded by
competent judges.
There are nineteen girls in these two clubs
and their local exhibit will be looked forward
to with a great deal of interest. Mrs. James and
Mrs. Pepper are very energetic and highly qua­
lified leaders.
This work, which is done under
their supervision, will be of a quality that will
attiact much interest. The Chemawa girls al­
ways finish what they start to do.
DAIRY
Ted Jake, Richard McCoy and Charles Law­
rence are now in full swing in their dairy indus­
try. Since completing their dairy barn they have
made many improvements in and about the barn
and pasture lot. Among the improvments are: The
fence around the pasture has been repaired, a
swing gate has been installed, electric lights were
installed, and a scale for weighing milk put in.
These boys are getting six gallons of milk each
day which is being sold to employees who have
contracted with them for their daily supply
of milk. They are planning on securing more
customers who will consume the increased supply
of milkwhich is looked for soon.
They do the milking at 4:00 a. m. and 4:00 p.m.
The milk is immediately pasteurized, bottled in
quart bottles and delivered to their customers.
Their barn is daily inspected and is always found
to be in a most sanitary condition. They collect
once a month for their sales and deposit 70 per­
cent of their profits in a savings account in
the main office. The purpose of these savings
accounts is to provide for increasing their dairy
holdings. These boys like the dairy business
and they come from areas where the dairy in­
dustry can be successfully carried on.
They are also caring for twin calves, which are
very interesting. Dairy instruction is being of
fered to them by their leader, Lawrence Thomas.
Part of each days’ time is spent in the farm dairy
herd where Mr. Thomas gives them very valuable
and thorough training.
Watch for these boys at the State Fair. They
will be out in the ring showing how they judge
dairy cows. They will also show one or more of
their cows in competition with ot her club boys
from Oregon.
P oultry C lub
Isaac Lee and Paul Arquette are now full fledged
poultry men. Their poultry house and pas: ure lot is
complete. During thesesunny days their 50 hens
may be seen out on the pasture lot plucking the
clover plants off and having a royal time. Since
moving them to the pasture, they have greatly in­
creased in egg production. At present, their hens
are laying about 65 per cent daily.
In addition to taking care of their own flocks,
they assist Raymond Dutoit, their local leader,
in the care and management of the farm battery
flock and the 470 baby chicks that will be the lay­
ing flock for the school next year. The experience
the boys are getting with the baby chicks will pie-
pare them well fortheir work next year with the
incubation and brooding of their own chicks.
The boys have a cash agreement with the Club,
who take all of the eggs at market price. Their
collections are also made once each month and
70 percent is put away in their saving account. The
boys are very thankful to Miss White, club man­
ager, who is cooperating so pleasantly with them.
Sanitation is the watch word around their poultry
yard and building, audit is a real pleasure to visit
their enterprise. The boys sell nothing but fresh
unfertile eggs.
They will soon have their hens paid for and
then will be “Lords of All They Survey.” Dur­
ing their spare club time they assist Mr. Dutoit
in pruning the apple orchard. They say they like
to prune trees.
Their 4-H club record books were carefully
checked recently and found to be well kept and
up to date.
