From the Vocational Departments
B arber S hop : The boys are busy with their
usual routine every day, cutting hair, shaving,
and giving shampoos. This week’s book study is
the structure of the bones in the head and face.
The “ Hauser Pomp’ ’ is giving the Barbers a real
test giving this sort of haircut. Old “ Chubby”
Woundedeye lost his Barber shears, and turned
the Barber shop inside out trying to locate it.
B akery : During the past week we have been
cooking and baking cookies, peach cobblers,
doughnuts, pies, cakes, and bread.
We have been studying about the different types
of flours, shortenings, sugars, and what the yeast,
salt, sugar, and malt does to the dough.
In addition to our usual routine we have been
taking tests each week and go over them to discuss
the questions among us. We are also making
charts on the “ Methods of Bread Making.”
M achine S hop : The farm shop boys working
in the machine shop are building a cow barn.
They plan to have six cows and sell the milk
to the employees on the campus. The boys in the
morning division have changed the lathes about
the shop. The drill press that was broken is being
welded together.
A uto M echanics : 1 ‘Good old Walter’ ’ Mesplie
has recently over-hauled the school truck. Frank
Harrison installed new gears on the project pick
up truck. “ Shorty” Cross replaced a new muffler
on the Chevrolet, pick-up. Ralph Wells is the
tool boy for this week.
E lectric S hop : The Electricians have been
finishing the wiring of the new practice house
by Hawley hall. Odd jobs have been finished
about the campus, especially in Winona hall.
S hoe S hop : The shoe shop gang or the “ Shirt-
tail” tribe,as they are called, hope that all of you
students and employees enjoyed your short vaca
tion during Christmas. Also, the boys are busy
repairing shoes of all kinds and learning the dif
ferent ways to repair shoes. The boys missed
“ Tom Harmon” Yellowmule as he went home as
soon as the football season was over.
P aint S hop : The boys in the paint shop have
completed repainting Mr. Showalter’s office, and
the dressers in McNary hall. They have replaced
windows of the Dairy Barn. They are waiting
for spring to come around as they have numer
ous paint jobs to do outside.
C arpentry : Under the sub-foreman, “ Rose
bud” Douthit, the crew, “ Jiggs” Whitford, Will
Teton, and Ben Bearchum figure on complet
ing the new practice house inside of three weeks.
“ Whole Wheats” Grant and helper “ Subs” Dilts
from Alaska are building four new typewriter
tables. Milo “ Jake” Enick and his tall friend
“ jee Wee” Alexander are still struggling with
the new chicken house by the Grade School.
Backbone and Captain Halfmoon took the lock
ers out of the rooms in Hawley hall so that the
girls will have more room to work.
S ewing : The sophomore sewing class are fin
ishing their semesters work, and are preparing'
for their examinations. Some of the girls have
completed their woolen dresses, while others arg'
weaving belts for their already finished dresses.
The girls in the junior class have completed
the capes for the smaller girls, and have started
on layettes. The capes have not been delivered-
for the reason that the little girls are to have
their pictures taken wearing these capes and also
the dresses which the sophomore girls have made.
The freshman clothing class are finishing up
their flannel pajamas, and are studying about
the manufacturing of woolen materials.
In the Productive Sewing class, the junior
girls are making little dresses for the McBride
hall girls. The freshman girls are making aprons,
pillow cases, and various articles in finishing up
the work for the semester.
H ome R elations : The Senior Home Rela
tions class are studying problems of family rela
tion. Examples of family problems are read and
discussed thoroughly.
J unior H ome M anagement : The girls in
the Junior Home management class are making
a study of house keeping problems. The two girls
now living in the Junior Practice house are
Marjorie Reynolds and Naomi Whitefox.
F ood : All the foods classes are completing the
semester’s work, and are all taking general re
views of the work they have covered. A number
of the girls are making posters to illustrate; the
classes of food, and their importance in the diet,
and are using the body to illustrate the points.
C ommercial : Both of the commercial classes
are getting along fine. The two classes are up in
their work for the semester, and the seniors have
completed studying the first half of their book.
The Specials have been taking notes in chapel
and they transcribe these notes. They took notes
on the Umatilla meeting, and have transcribed
them. Other work that the Special class has is
mimeographing, and cutting stencils for this
work.
