A Summary o f Events Which Have
Transpired
Suggested for Indian Schools
'P H E first m eeting of th e students was held on
Sept. 29, to elect officers for the student coun
cil. T h e students considered various candidates
and elected th e follow ing to th e Council offices:
President, Forrest N orton; V ice-President, M ar
jorie M atheson; Secretary, H en ry A rnoux; P u b
licity C hairm an, Pressley LaBreche; Program
C hairm an, A dam Beareub.
T h e n ext assembly was called by President
N orton on O ct. 6. M r. G eorge P. L aV atta, a
visitor on th e cam pus and also the speaker, was
introduced to th e assem bly by Adam Beareub of
th e pregram com m ittee, who had arranged for
Mr. L aV atta to speak to th e students.
Mr. L aV atta gave the students a very in te r
esting talk on the opportunities th at a student
has here at Chemawa if one would only take a d
vantage of them . H e said- th a t leadership is
needed very m uch on various reservations
and he also stated th a t th is is th e place w here ft
should be developed and practiced.
On W ednesday, October 12, another m eeting
was called to order by th e President. T h e guest
speaker for th e occasion was Mr. Allen H ulsizer,
from W ashington D.C. H is talk was very im
p o rtan t and in terestin g to th e -stu d e n t body, as
it pertained to th e school sp irit of th is in
stitu tio n . H e said he d id n ’t seem to see very
m uch school spirit here and th a t we should do
som ething to m ake every one more enthusiastic
in e v ery ' th in g th a t is undertaken. H e stated
th a t th e L iterary Societies was a good step to
w ard th e advancem ent of the school if th e soc
ieties are active as th e stud en ts are p lanning to
make. them .
T h e follow ing day th e S tu d en t Council held
a m eeting in W inona hall at 7 o ’clock. A t this
m eeting there was an open discussion on the
proposed social hour program w hich is quite the
issue at present.
On October 16, a general assembly was called
to order to discuss th is plan, w hich would allow
them more social freedom if practiced rig h t. Supt.
Jackson said he would consider th e stu d e n t’s
proposal and would also discuss th e plan at a
m eeting w ith the faculty.

^JPH E E ducational Division has issued, in a t
tractive form at, a list of suggested books for
Indian schools. T he list is divided into th re e
principal sections: books for the younger pupils,
th ro u g h the sixth grade; books for the older p u
pils, through the h igh school; books for adults
teachers, advisers, principals, social w orkers, etc.
T here is also a brief section on encyclopedias,
dictionaries and atlases; and one on m agazines
and new spapers. E ach reference is followed by
concise bibliographical data and by a brief com
m ent.
T h e booklet was printed as a student project
at H askell In stitu te and may be obtained by
m ailing a check or m oney order for fifteen cents
to H askell In stitu te at Law rence, K ansas.
Literary Societies Organize
n p H R O U G H Mr. L arsen, a form er L iterary
Society m em ber, the old Chem aw a societies
were again established w ith renew ed interest.
Since the opening of the school year the b oys’
societies consists of tw o groups, the E xcelsiors
and th e R eliance, each having th eir respective
leaders.
T he idea behind these societies is to build up
school sp irit, leadership and to develop better
sportsm anship am ong the students. T h eir m em
bers expect them to be helpful for both men
tai apd physical grow th, by means of debate
and contests betw een th e groups.
T h e officers for the Excelsiors are: P resident,
K endal V anpelt; yice-P resid en t, A lfred Sm ith;
Sec’t, Joe Reddoor; T reasurer, Charles F arron;
S ergeant-at-arm s, John Cobell. T h e R eliance offi
cers are: P resident, R aym ond A ndrew s; V ice;

Mr. and Mrs. T u rn ey back in our fold again.
M rs. T u rn ey recently underw ent an operation in
the Cushm an H ospital at Tacom a, W ash., and
she is recuperating very nicely. “ Yes, life w ith
