HERE , are only two phases of the Indian question: One, that the
Indian shall remain in the country as a survival of the" aboriginal
inhabitants, a vagrant at the mercy of the state, a continual pensioner
upon the bounty of the people, a study for the ethnologist, a toy for the
tourist; the other, that he shall be taught to work, live and act as a reputable,
moral citizen, and thus become self-supporting, useful member of society;
0 The latter is the policy of present day Indian schools, and if carried to its
legitimate conclusion will settle for all time the so called “Indian question.”
