CHEMAWA’S NEW GRADING PLAN
Grading on the following points will be averaged with aca
demic and vocational grades. Grades on these points will be
taken in vocational and academic classes and in the dormitories.
This is being done to stimulate habit formation in characteris
tics which are extremely essential to vocational leadership or
to business success of any nature.
GRADING POINTS
Initiative for the purpose of grading is assumed to be demon
strated by:
Work properly done
The completion of work attempted
The degree of interest shown
Doing more than assigned
Contributing to class discussion
The proper use of time
Having a good attitude toward improvement
Being properly aggressive
Quick reactions
Working to capacity
Making up work which has been missed
Social initiative and attitude is demonstrated by:
Cooperating with worthy undertakings
Showing good sportsmanship
Demonstrating good school spirit
Demonstrating fairness
Having a friendly attitude
Being courteous and thoughtful
Taking criticism in good spirit
Having control of emotions
Obeying school rules
Honesty
Co-operation
This is self-explanatory.
Written and Oral English— Grades may be given in all class
es and dormitories.
Correct spelling
Correct paragraphing
Correct punctuation
Correct spoken English
Correct pronunciation
Avoidance of slang
The correct use of verbs and pronouns
Avoiding double negatives
Conservation will include:
Conservation of power, light, property and sup
plies.
Ingenuity will include:
Capacity to formulate proper plans for the carry
ing out of any new undertaking.

Memory will be graded on the following points:
Capacity to remember orders and directions
Memory for appointments etc.
Memory for names of classmates
Memory for school snbject matter
Achievement— Grades on this point will be weighted and will
cover general efficiency in each class.
VOCATIONS
SHOE SHOP
The shoe and harness makes have been a busy lot
the past month. They repaired 273 pairs of shoes in
January and are going to overtake that mark this
month.
CARPENTER SHOP
The rotating boys in the carpenter shop are making
music stands for the jazz band. Vernon Jackson has
made an extension dining hall table for Mr. Showalter.
William Spotted Eagle will invite inspection on one
of the prettiest pieces of furniture, both in wood and
workmanship. This is the best which has been made
in the shop for sometime. A walnut chest cedar-lined.
A fine “hope chest” for someone.
BEAUTY PARLOR
The beauty shop is now in first class condition. We
have moved back in to continue our regular work.
You will be surprised to see what the painters have
done to it. We wish to express our appreciation to
the painters and the many people who have helped to
repair the shop.
HOME ECONOMICS
The home economics staff and Supt. Ryan and his
wife were entertained at a three-course dinner in the
Hawley hall dining room on Tuesday evening, Feb.
26. The senior planning class prepared and served
the dinner which was dished out at an attractively set
table decorated with yellow tapers and jonquils.
