We measure the goodness of God from ourselves;
we measure his goodness, his justice, his wisdom, by
something we call just, good, or wise in ourselves.
He that will give himself to all manner of ways to
get money may be rich; so he that lets fly all he knows
or thinks may by chance be satirically witty. Hon
esty sometimes keeps a man from growing rich, and
civility from being witty.
Men are not troubled to hear a man dispraised, be
cause they know, though he be naught, there’s worth
in others, but women are mightily troubled to hear
any of them spoken against, as if the sex itself were
guilty of some unworthiness.
Fine wits destroy themselves with their own plots,
in meddling with great affairs of state. They com
monly do as the ape that saw the gunner put bullets
in the cannon, and was pleased with it, and he would
be doing so too: At last he puts himself into the piece,
and so both the ape and the bullet were shot away
together.
Wise men say nothing in dangerous times. The
lion, you know, called the sheep to ask her if his
breath smelt: She said, “Aye;” he bit off her head
for a fool. He called the wolf and asked him: He
•aid, “No;” he tore him to pieces for a flatterer. At
last he called the fox and asked him: Truly he had
got a cold and could not smell.
The boys of Troop No. 5 are fortunate in having
Mr. Allen as Scoutmaster. At the last meeting Mr.
Decorah took this troop in hand and entertained them
with Indian legends.
Mr. Henderson, Scoutmaster of Troop No. 7, took
his charges in hand at the last meeting and gave them
some valuable instruction in the process of voting by
ballot.
Troop No. 8, under Scoutmaster Francisco, met in
the Brewer Hall reading room. New members were
given their first course in knot tying.
Each of our troops was represented at the bugle
call contest in Salem on Armistice Day—Troop No. 8
by Leslie Evans, No. 7 by Bennie Sanderson, No. 5
by Walter Majhor. Walter Majhor was given sec
ond place. Calls were required and Walter Majhor
gave them like a veteran but was given one point less
than the winner for lack of form. Form rating was
new to us. We did not know that it figured, as we
thought that the execution of the calls was all that
was necessary.
Troop No. 8 has a fire set which was put to use at
the last meeting. They made fire in short order.
