vitation to the home of Supt. and Mrs. Lipps, where
for an hour or two the guests were entertained and
served delicious refreshments. It was a period of real
pleasure for all and the class were most grateful to host
and hostess for the thoughtful courtesies shown them.
On Monday afternoon there was a game of baseball
between our first team of this year and a team com
posed of alumni members. With all respect to our
old-timers, the fact remains that the outcome was just
too bad—it was one-sided, very, but the game had its
thrilling moments.
In the evening, early, autos began to arrive with
people desiring to attend the operetta, “Pickles.” Of
course, this was a repetition of the production and
work of Saturday evening, but in this case it was for
the general public and admission was charged. There
was a fine crowd in attendance and our cast again
glorified themselves and their school. Many of our
visitors found much to win their approval and their
praise and we can in truth say that it was all that we
had hoped it would be. It was a proud occasion for
many of us.

Supt. Lipps, who was in charge, gave a few intro
ductory remarks where they were needed, and in every
way the program was a treat. State Superintendent
C. A. Howard, who was with us and who delivered the
address to the class, certainly won the esteem and ap
proval of all by his masterly discourse. It rang true in
every way and was replete with good sound sense—
just such a talk as we all needed. It was a rare pleasure
for Chemawa that he could be on our program on this
occasion. He will always be warmly welcomed here at
the school. All of our young people who were on the
program did splendidly and we were proud of them.
At the proper moment Principal Mote presented the
class to Supt. Lipps who took pleasure in handing to
each graduate his diploma—twenty-three had com
pleted the high school course.
An incident not on the program was the conferring
by the Salem Conservatory of Music, Dr. R. W. Hans
Seitz director, in the name of the State of Oregon,
the degree of Doctor of Music upon Ruthyn Turney.
Supt. Lipps called Mr. Turney to the platform and in
a few well-chosen words handed him his degree. Aside
from our genuine surprise, our sincere appreciation of
it all from beginning to end, doubt regarding our merit
and ability, we cannot yet voice more than our thanks
to those kindly souls who have thus honored us.
