they sang during Christmas mass said by 'Father Gal J.
At noon the students enjoyed a fine Christmas pin
ner in their nice large dining hall. Various employes
were present, as is the custom here, and assisted in
serving the students during the meal. The orchestra
provided fine music, too, and altogether it was a time
of great feasting and great joy for all. The din
ing hall looked beautiful in its holiday decorations and
everything, in everyway, seemed just right, thanks to
Mrs. Stuart and Mrs. Larsen and their willing and
efficient co-workers.
Beginning at 2:00 oclock on Christmas afternoon the
big gym was the scene of various sport contests. The
Reliance literary society boys were pitted against the
poys of the Excelsior society and the latter organization
met defeat. The girls were also given their athletic
chance, the contests for them being between the mem
bers of the Nonpareil and Winona societies. This eon-
test resulted in a tie. It was a lively and entertaining
afternoon.
In the evening there was a reception ip the gym;
nasium for the students who are domiciled in Winona
and Hawley hall (girls) and Mitchell and Small Boys.
The orchestra was in attendance and provided pleasing
music. It proved a memorable occàsìóri for the
younger stndènts. At the same hour there was a re
ception held in McNary Hall in honor of the officers
and their lady friends. This, too, was in every way a
delightful affair.
On Wednesday morning all of the school activities
were resumed until noon. In the, afternoon sports
peld forth in the gymnasium. Ye scribe was not in
attendance, but was informed that the various contests
^ere most interesting. The seniors and juniors were
the contestants and the glory of winning went to the
seniors.
In the evening the world famous movie, “ King of
Kings,” was put on the s p m at the auditorium.

spirit of Christmas as it ought to be than this great
picture. It gives, a lesson Ip all, young and pld,
which is unforgetable. It was a wise move in getting
the “ King of Kings” as one of our holiday features.
On Thursday afternoon infer-class sports in thè gym
was the order of the day. Both boys and girls of the
Freshmen and Sophomore classes were pitted against
each other. It was an, afternoon of thrills for all in
attendance.' It W reported. that fhegame of basketball
between the boys’ teams was qpg of the season’s sport
Classics. It was won by the Sophomores, but the
Freshmen won the contest.
In the evening there was a game of basketball be-
tween a pick-up team at Chçmawa and Northwest
Cannery team of Salem—our first team being absent.
Our boys did well, but not well enough. All in all,
it was a “ sporty” afternoon and evening.
On Friday afternoon, Dec. 28th, a large crowd was
drawn tp the gym on account qf cqntg§te— çharppipn-
§hip affairs. The varions contests were between teams
representing the Senior and Freshmen classe^. The
events yyere bf usual interest and each cl^ss had its
enthusiastic supporters. However, fate decreed that
the freshmen should win.
In the evening an interesting farce in three acts,
entitled “ Second Childhood,” was staged jn the audi
torium by members of the Senior class under the di
rection of their academic teacher, Miss White. In
every way it proved most pleasing—creditable to all
who carried a part and to Miss White who coached
them. It proved a ‘ -high light’ ’ in our holiday season.

The big gym was the scene of much joy on Satur
day evening, Dec. 29th. It was the occasion of a
holiday reception for the McBride and Winona Hall
older girls and McNary Hall and the larger boys of
Mitchell Hall. If cetainlywas a time of joy for all
and the two hours or more passed all too quickly.
Supt. Lipps and Asst. Supt. Carroll and a numher of
other faculty members were in attepdiance. The
orchestra provided g°o<j tpusm.
“T h e ÎasgéVenf on our schedule for 1928, was accord
ing to Mr. Carroll who1' was in charge, one of the
greatest importance—it was the annual spelling contests
This is an annual affair and is a contest in which rep
resentatives of our four literary societies vie with each
other in both written and oral work. It is an event
that is recognized at Chemawa as “ important” in every
sense of the word.
Mrs. Stuart gaveouf the words on Monday evening,
whjje the judges were Mss. Davis, Mr- Schmuck, Dr.
Sisco and Mrs. Lobdell. ’ There was great enthusiasm
on the part of ¿Hand society spirit washigh, p i e or
chestra was imattendahee to enliven the affair. At
the close of the contest when Dr. Sisco arose to aa-
nounce the winner there was a few seconds when those
present “ held their breath,” only to cheer the win
ners. ’ The Doctor announced the Nonpareils § | win
ners with Reliance in second place.
