Mrs. Stuart, dining-room matron, was a recent
Portland visitor.
Miss Josephine Sommers was up from Portland as
a dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Mason on Christ
mas Day.
Coquelle Thompson, now attending College in
Corvallis, spent the the holiday week with friends at
Chemawa.
To Mr. Eriske thanks are due because of the fact
that he had the light globes ' ‘dipped” to produce
certain color effects in the Christmas pageant, and for
other assistance as well.
Among the old-timers who were here for the holidays
was Thomas McCully, now of Portland. Tommie is
now married and is getting on nicely. While here he
was the special guest of Mr. and ,Mrs. Larsen, as was
Silas Moon, also of Portland, and who is a. source of
pride to his many friends.
Miss Edna Groves, supervisor of home economics}
arrived at Chemawa a few days before Christmas on an
official visit. After remaining here for a day or two
she went to Corvallis, her childhood home, to spend
the holidays’ with relatives and friends. She is now
back kt Chemawa in her official capacity.
There w'ere many family dinners at Chemawa on
Christmas Day. All enjoyable in every way. There
was a wonderful dinner served at the * ‘Employes Club’ ’
for those who are members of the club. From reports
to reach us everybody at Chemawa dined well on Christ
mas, even though not wisely in every case.
There are many people who cherish the love of
what they term a “ white” Christmas. This means
snow on the ground. Well, this year it was a trifle
late in snowing here—missed the exact date by twenty?
four hours. On Wednesday night of last week sever
al inches of snow fell at Chemawa.
Robert Peratrovich, now a junior in the Universi
ty of Washington, motored down from Seatle on
Wednesday of last week to visit friends here at his
old school during the holiday season. Robert is
proving himself to be an able young man in every
sense of the word. We all enjoyed his ■visit with us.
Among those who visited at Chemawa during the
holidays was Walter Eagle. We were glad to see him.
H e was a member of our last graduating class and is
at present disciplinarian at Warmsprings, Oregon,
where he is getting along splendidly. He was ac
companied to Chemawa by Mr Thomas Heminger*
who is property clerk at Warmspring. Mr. Htminger
is a Haskell graduate, a likeable youttg gentleman,
and welcome at our school. We trust both of these
young men had an enjoyable Visit with us.
Among others who visited us during the holidays
may be mentioned Coquelle Thompson, Terrance
Booth, George Johnson, Joseph Racine, and Miss Iva
Dupuis.
The Jirst prize for literary work among the students
last month went to Fred Sandberg, while the second
prize went to Wauseka Hauser. Both of these boys
deserve great credit in addition to the prizes they won.
One of the memorable events connected with our
holiday season that will always be remembered by our
Catholic students was a trip to Salem to attend mid
night mass. A large truck load of young people made
the trip, chaperoned by Miss Roddy.
Mr. H. Larsen of Warrenton, Oregon, has been
the guest of Chemawa relatives since the beginning
of the holidays. He is the father of Mr? Chas. BI
Larsen, one of our clerks. Mrs. Emma Schaum, H
Westport, Or., a sister of Mr. Chas. E. Larsen, has
also been a guest of the Chemawa relatives of late.
Ijdiss Idaho Lipps departed last Monday for Coeur
d ’Alene, Idaho, where she is to teach in the schools of.
that city. This is a splendid opening for Miss Lipps
and it is pleasing to us to note the fact. Since the
beginning of this school year she had been a member of
our orchestra, and a loyal one, too, and we know
that the orchestra as a whole will be a unit in hoping
for her a success in every way in her new field.
Our chapel exercises last Sunday evening were in
charge of Supt. Lipps, who made a splendid appeal to
our Students to do their utmost during the remainder
of the school year and (ever after) to make good at
whatever tasks they may engage. “ Keep your nerve
and don’t wobble” may properly be termed his topic,
and he made good use of it, too. A fine talk. In
addition the choir sang a number, Archie Dean gave
a reading, the orchestra played a selection from “ Mile
Modiste” by Victor Herbert, and Robert Peratrovich,
now a junior at the University of Washington, who
was present, gave a group of saxophone solos and was
warmly received by the student body.
