CHRISTMAS
The T u le Tide Season

Christmas has passed again and we are now settled
into the routine of 1929. May tibe new y ear foe a hap
py ope for all—we believe i t will be. W hat is finer
than Christmas—-the m id-w inter holidays? For those
of the younger generation the yttle tid e season brings
a joy different in many ways th an any other occasion
in life. It seems to carry with it a little more of gen
uine joy and good w ilt th an other days of a holiday na
ture. For younger people it has a joy and a thrill all
its own. Its places in th eir h earts' something which
time can never eradicate wholly.
For weeks many of our smaller and younger students
had been planning for th e event and counting th e days
u n til th e “ day of days”’ would arrive. G reat is th e
anticipation of yoúth! I t is difficult to state w ith
assurance ju st when our Christmas observance realty
began. From S upt. Iffpps and his assistant, Mr. Car-
roll, on down throughout the faculty there was an
evidence of th e “ Spirit o f Christm as’ * long before the
day arrived—and maybe th a t marked th e beginning of
our yule tide, we cannot say, as we are not noted as a
psychologist.
I t m ight have h ad its first material observation in
th e band, for early in the m orning of the Saturday
before Christmas Mff K unkel, our esteemed band
m aster, staged a little demonstration* and presented
gifts to h is musical charges. H e stole a march on
them —took them somewhat by surprise, but they
evened u p on him at th e n ex t m eeting of the organiza
tion by presenting him w ith a directoras baton. The
band did not lead by any large margin in starting
things off, for the printers had their annual “ big eats”
banquet; a t the hour of- 11:00- o ’clock on the same
day. T his is always a great occasion in local print-*
dona and is immensely enjoyed by all- from th e lowly
“ devil*” to the chief w arrior of the departm ent.
In the evening of December 22nd Mrs. K line and
Mrs. Reid p u t on a Christmas entertainm ent w ith
pupils of the lower grades• T his proved a most en
joyable evening for all and it was of especial credit to

both Mrs. K line and Mrs. Reid and th e young people
who took parts in the affair. W e are able at this
stage of our account to mention the fact th a t Victor
Sm ith was Santa Claus and th at V ictor really does
not belong in the class of t h f youngsters w ith whom
he worked on this occasion. Santa Claus can take les
sons w ith profit from Victor. I t was a most pleasing
affair all around.
A t th e conclusion of the entertainm ent uboye-uifn-;
tioned the various classes enjoyed ‘ Christmas tree’ ’
festivities in their school rooms, and here, too, there
was joy, and much, of ft.
D uring the forenoon of Sunday, Dec. 23rd, the Cath
olic and Protestant students cn j,o y 0 special, religious
Christmas programs in their separate chapels and the
'joys of the season” took on a somewhat different at
mosphere.
On Sunday evening Mrs. T urney and her choir gave
what has gr<nvn to be an annual program at Qhemawa
—what may be, for lack of a better name, called a
pageant. The, various events attending the birth of
Christ are featured in this program and Christmas
carols are sung throughout. It always proves im pres
sive and carries a lesson, unlike anything else. T here
is an atmosphere about this pageant th at cannot fail to
assist in making one feel inclined to be a better man,
yeoman or child,. Tiffs pageant always takes place on
our auditorium stage during our regular Sunday even
ing Chapel hour.

for assisting choir members in their memory work-
also from the loyal choir members themselves. If
proved w orthy the efforts of all.
On the Monday following there was unusual
activity on all sides in preparation for Christmas Day-!
In the evening there were. Christmas trees ip. th e
various dormitories and in some instances most inter
esting. p r a a m s added to th e interest and enjoyment
of the occasion.
A fter a night, w hich for some of them seemed all
too short, Mrs? Turney and her choir members were
about the grounds before 4:00 o ’clock on Christmas
m orning pinging carols. All of the dormitories and
