THE HOLIDAYS AT CHEMAWA
(Continued from page 2)
test and it was a race from the start. Lila Crofoot
proved to be the champion spud-lifter, though closely
pursued by Anna Fagerstrom.
In the first basketball game the Junior Nonpareils
followed in the footsteps of their older sisters by win
ning from the Junior Winonas by an 8 to 2 score,
while the Nonpareils had little difficulty in defeating
Winona 20 to 0. In a like manner the Reliance five
walloped the Excelsior quint 13 to 1.
The points tallied up for the afternoon sports as
follows: Nonpareils 40 Vs. Winonas 0. Excelsiors
30 Vs. Reliance 30.
On Friday evening the annual spelling contest be
tween the four older literary societies took place,
with teams representing each society in competition.
This match was a good one in every way and has
value away beyond many other forms of entertainment.
Itwasagood “spelling bee’’ and w7as won by the
Nonpareil society. Mrs. Leavenworth gave out the
words.
On Saturday evening the Winona Hall girls gave
a reception to the voungstersof Small Boys’ Home and
the small boys of Mitchell Hall. This was a little folks
affair, but it proved that little ones can be as nice as
the nicest and have just as much enjoyment. This
proved to be another delightful affair.
On Sunday we had our regular religious exercises
at scheduled intervals, closing the day with chapel
exercises in the evening with Supt. Hall in charge.
This proved of interest, as is ever the case, and the
exercises w’ere brought to a close by a very fine talk
by Supt. Hall—in fact, it was one of his very best.
On Monday evening, Dec. 29, we were all treated to
a moving picture entertainment at the auditorium.
“The Call of the Canyon’’ was the main picture and
it proved of interest to all.
On Tuesday evening under the avalanche of our
basket-shooting basketeeis, the much touted Salem
high school five who were strong contenders for the
state championship last year and were favored to wrin
by no less than a two to one margin, w’ere defeated.
The first minute of play found the score 7 to 0 in our
favor after a succession of rapid fire passes and shots.
Salem hardly had time to wake up to the fact that
the game had started before William Brendible, our
midget forward, had hooped the ball three times and
threw one foul.
Dewey Matt and William Brendible, forwards; Reg
inald DePoe, center; Charles George and Dandro
George, guards; w’ere our men who started the game.
All played throughout the w’hole contest except Dan
dro. He wras taken out just before the close of the
first half on account of four “Personals.” His
absence weakened the team a lot in both the offensive
and defensive play on account of us having no avail
able seasoned substitute, but that did not weaken their
determined spirit and at times they displayed a light
ning-like passing game that Salem was unable to solve
and that was good to see.
With but a scant two minutes to play Salem forged
into the lead for the only time of the game. At the
one minute mark and the score23 to 18 in Salem’s
favor, our five uncorked the speediest passing and
most accurate shooting we hope to see and netted six
points in less time than it took to say “scat”
and won the most exciting game played here in a long
time. The final soore was 24 to 23 in our favor.
On Wednesday evening, the last of the year of 1924,
the young ladies of McBride Hall were hostesses in a
“Costume Party” given in the gym. This affair
proved most delightful in every way. There was
good music and mirth on every hand, and at the
proper hour delicious refreshments were served.
Many surprisingly attractive costumes were in evi
dence and a committee consisting of Mrs.Brickell, Miss
Gunn, and Mr. Bewley were judges in the selection
of the prize-winners and for the girls Marie Andrews
was awarded first prize in a Russian costume,
Anna Fagerstrom and Josephine Nelson—Purette—
took the second prize; for the boys Joe Racine took
first as a Zuave, Eleanor Hauk (representing a boy)
took second in Spanish attire, while Joe Verney took
third, also in Spanish costume. In every way this
party proved most memorable.
On Jan. 1, in the second game of the week, the same
team that humbled Salem high took the Anderson &
Brown combination and contenders for the Commercial
League championship dow n the line by a 41 to 24 score.
The score does not do justice to the class and speed
displayed by the Salem aggregation for they played
hard, fast and clean ball to the very last minute. This
same team came out last year and they were the same
good sports then that they were on Thursday. Out
team seemed to have struck its stride in the Salem game
and worked even better against the commercial leag
uers. Their passing and basket shooting was faster
and much more accurate. Dew’ey Matt was a whole
team in himself, having registered 24 of the 41 points
made.
Led by their captain and hard-working center, Reg
inald DePoe, Dewey Matt, William Brendible, Charles
George and Dandro George displayed machine like team
work that could not be beaten. In fact a team that
continues to pass the ball around and up to the basket
like they did in this game cannot be beaten. Our five
varsity men seem to have been found, and though they
are a long way from being perfect or unbeatable, they
have made a very good start and are improving with
each game. Though there are many hard games on
our schedule the team will not have to worry providing
they keep up the harmonious spirit and hard consistent
playing that they have displayed in the recent games.
On Saturday evening, January 3, we closed our va
cation period with moving pictures featuring Douglas
Fairbanks, Jr. Who dares to suggest that those at
Chemawa did not have the time of their lives? It was
truly a great vacation, but now that it is over it is
time for us all to buckle down to business. Let all
again take up the struggle to gain an education with all
determination to win out—enter into this undertaking
as you did into our recent entertainment features and
you are certain to win. A few months more and
“school days” will be over forever for some of you.
Make the utmost of your remaining few months. Did
you have a fine Christmas season? You did.
