ACADEMIC NOTES
Now th a t th e test in w ritin g , read in g , and co n v er­
satio n al exercises are behind us the q u estio n s used
last year in th e final exam s have been d istrib u ted to
the classroom s and in d u strial teach ers for a th o ro u g h
review before ta k in g the finals for th is year.
W hen a teacher is needed in any of th e classroom s
and an appeal is m ade to the Ju n io rs to “ help o u t”
we like to see the sm ile th a t flashes out on Jack A b ra­
h a m ’s face as his hand goes up to volu n teer. L ast
W ednesday Jack took care of th e second grad ers w hile
Miss Ju d d was absent for a tim e. T h e sm all folks
seem to enjoy being ta u g h t by Jack q u ite as well as he
enjoys the teach in g .
E ach d ep artm en t is c o n trib u tin g its p art tow ard the
success of th e op eretta. T h e sew ing room s and the
tailo r shop are tu rn in g o u t nobby costum es, th e c a r­
p en ter shop has grow n an enoim ous tree w ith sp read ­
ing branches, and the p ain ters will soon be d ip p in g
b ru sh es in bark brown and leaf green to help convince
us th a t we are really o u t of doors w ith a bunch of
college boys and girls on th e n ig h t of M ay 26.
On account of our in d u strial dem onstration tak in g
place on th e dates scheduled for th e e ig h th grade e x ­
am inations for the state diplom as, none of the eig h th
g rad e stu d en ts was able to tak e th e exam ination this
year. F or th e past two years th is ex am in atio n has lieen
q u ite an event in o u r academ ic w ork, and stu d en ts
plan and prepare for it d u rin g th e en tire year. In
fact, a n u m b er of the boys and g irls in this y e a r’s
class began th e ir p rep aratio n tw o y ears ago by su c ­
cessfully passing the state physiology test, and th e
follow ing year th e exam ination in g eo g rap h y , thereby
elim in a tin g tw o subjects from the exam s for th is year.
SE N IO R NOTES
T h is is th e last of th e senior notes th is year, so
w e’ll try and give all th e new s we know .
O u r botany is another study w hich we pay a tte n ­
tion to . E v e ry th in g is going along nicely.
W e are w o rk in g h ard er th a n ever on o u r operetta.
E very spare m om ent you can h ear som e-one sin g in g
a solo or a couple sin g in g a d u e t. In fact, it keeps us
busy.
T h e senior reporter d o esn ’t seem to w ant to stop
w ritin g , b u t we guess h e ’ll have to as th e re seem s to
be n o th in g m ore to be said. W e ’ve prom ised to give
you all th e new s and this is all.
G ra d u a tio n day grow s near and we will soon be
leav in g . W e are g ratefu l to the m any in stru c to rs and
teach ers w ho have assisted us over th e h ard places
and wish to th a n k every one of them for th e ir kind
help
W e, th e senior class of ’23, do will th is space to the
com ing seniors of 1924 in hopes th at th ey will m ake
use of it to the best advantage in le ttin g th eir friends
and relatives know how they are progressing, as did
th e senior class of 1923.
T h e senior exam inations started early . L ast W e d ­
nesday, T h u rsd ay and F rid a y we w ere kept busy a n ­
sw ering th e various questions, in general exercises,
lite ra tu re and E n g lish . A nd now we are tack lin g the
h ard est ones, those in geom etry and botany.
Did you hear of th e seniors’ prom otion in th e d in ­
in g hall? T h e senior table w as moved from th e south
end of th e d in in g hall to th e m iddle. Now w hen
visitors com e they are pleased to see th e senior m otto
and colors placed w here they m ake a good show ing.
ITEM S FROM TH E TR A D ES
T h e farm ers are p la n tin g potatoes.
P rospects for straw berry crops are excellent th is year.
T h e m asons are building new w alks at th e rear of
th e s tu d e n ts ’ k itchen.
A recent test of our d airy herd show s it to be 100
p er cent free of disease.
A t present th e tailors are m ak in g costum es, as well
as other th in g s, and have a busy shop.
T h e carp en ters are rep airin g th e scenery at the
au d ito riu m and are m aking some new scenery as well.
T h e p a in te rs w ill p ain t th e new scenery for th e op­
e re tta th is y ear. T h ey have been finishing som e of
th e fu rn itu re th a t was not com pleted before dem on­
stratio n .
T h ere has com e to ou r notice at various tim es c e r­
ta in individuals who are loath to w ork at th eir assigned
tasks in shop or on farm , b u t w ho are eager to w ork
for outside em ployers anyw here th ro u g h o u t the
neig h borhood. W hen questioned concern in g this
seem ing relu ctan ce one is m et w ith th e statem ent
th a t n o th in g is received for th e work at Chem aw a.
T h is statem en t show s a lack of appreciation of th e ad ­
v antages and hom e su rro u n d in g s and th e w rong
sp irit tow ard th e place th a t shelters and cares for ou r
stu d e n ts. W e are glad to note, how ever, th a t th e
m ajority p u t th e proposition differently in th a t they
first w ant to know if they can be spared from th e ir
places of w ork before they consider th e ir ow n in c lin a ­
tio n . T hese are th e lads w ho have o u r com m endation
and it is found th a t th e y alw ays are th e m ost sought
after by o u r neighbors w ho need help.
T h e school year is draw ing to a close a t C hem aw a.
W ith each passing y ear it is n atu ral to ta k e stock of
ourselves and see w hat we have accom plished and by
a so rt of m ental trial balance determ in e w here we
stand in com parison w ith form er years. W e find no
excuses necessary for th e past year. N o d o u b t there
is m uch unaccom plished th a t h ad b e e n in S u p t. H a ll’s
plan s in th e form of a hope, b u t even so, u n d er his
supervision an d th e co-operation of his faculty th e
w ork has been com m endable in every way and vast
p rogress has been m ade in every w ay. W e are alw ays
hop in g for b etter and g reater achievem ent and are al­
ready looking forw ard to and p la n n in g ou r w ork for
n ex t year.
