O ur baseball tossers blew taps for the W . U. Bear
cats to the tu n e of 10 to 5 when they m et last F rid ay
afternoon on S w eetland field. O u r ancient rivals p u t
up a desperate fight till the last fram e, th o u g h o u t-h it
and o u t fielded from th e first. In the seventh in n in g
th e Bearcats pawed around and tore u p the earth for
three ru n s, m ak in g the score 6 to 5 in o u r favor.
T heir hopes took w ing and soared high, but P h in n ey
soon b ro u g h t them back to earth by sending the re
m aining h itters back to w arm the bench.
P h inney proved th e ra t poison for the Bearcat sw at
ters, allow ing b u t six hits and whiffing eig h t m en. T h e
W . U . coach rushed in th ree tw irlers to check our h it
tin g m achine, w hich was slam m ing the onion all over
th e lot. In all, our b atters corralled 18 h its— h alf of
them being tw o-baggers. B u ch ert, A tk in s, G eorge,

tribu to rs.
W ith the score still 6 to 5 at th e first of th e n in th ,
our redskinned w arriors neatly sewed up the gam e
w ith five solid drives and as m any ru n s, m aking the
score 10 to 5 in our favor and “ flowers she c o u ld n ’t
sm ell” for old W . U .

rolled the b atters back in apple-pie order.

ed, for o u r batsm en ran g the bell for 18 sound gingles,
w hich included tw o home ru n s registered by M inthorne
and N or west, respectively, and a three-bagger a n n e x
ed by Brendible.

It was th o u g h t for som etim e th a t all th e baseball
m aterial was on th e b oys’ side, but not so, for th e
N o n p areils’ w hirlw ind nine took the breeze o u t of
th e W in o n as’ sails last week by th e disastrous score
of 27 to 7. T h e girls have got pitchers, catchers,
southpaw s and ev erything, and real ones, too. T h e ir
pitchers can zip ’em across the plate and th eir catchers
can hold ’em and even say su ch th in g s to ra ttle the
b atter as: “ Come on, feed ’em to me. She c a n ’t h it,
s h e ’s got a hole in h er b a t.” And slide! K elly is n ’t
in it. T h ey slide on first.

T h e m achine shop and blacksm ith shop are being
p ain ted.
O ur plum bing detail is w orking on dem onstration
problem s.
C arp enters are m aking various repairs and are tu r n
in g over dem onstration w ork to th e painters for finish
ing.
T he boys of the auto m echanics’ division are having
some practice in cleaning cars, g rin d in g valves and
various jobs along th is line.
C om m encem ent, final ex am inations, d em onstration,
all are before us. L et us all try to do ou r best th at
all may go well and pupils and em ployes be happy.

T h e engineers have done very well in the m atter of
firing th e boilers w ith fuel oil. T here is a keen riv a l
ry between th e three shifts to see who can keep the
m ost steam w ith th e lowest oil consum ption. T h is
is excellent train in g and will be of value to our s tu
d en ts w hen they take up w ork after they leave us.
If the boys of the yard detail hear the m any com pli
m ents of visitors to C hem aw a on the beautiful law ns
and flowers they should be proud of th eir w ork.
M any people say of our school, ‘‘I t is a beautiful place,
such beautiful g ro u n d s .” L et us keep it that way and
help out the yard boys by keeping th in g s th a t will
d etract from the beauty of th e place picked up.
O u r baseball team has won every gam e played so
far th is year. T h e boys will go to P ortland on F rid ay
w here they will cross bats w ith th e Colum bia U nivei-
sity team . T he n ex t day, S atu rd ay , a gam e will be
played w ith th e M ultnom ah A thletic Club.
