A day th a t is never allowed to pass unobserved at
Chem aw a by stu d en ts and em ployees is the an n iv e r
sary of the m arriage of S u p t. and Mrs. H all. All u n it
ed last W ednesday in h o n o rin g th is estim able couple
in every way possible. I t proved an occasion never
to be forgotten and T h e A m erican, h aving the last say,
w ishes S upt. and Mrs. H all “ M any H ap p y R etu rn s of
th e D a y .”
P lay in g tru e to form in the last gam e of the season
our varsity won a splendid victory over the W ater
F ro n t A thletic Club basketball team from P ortland
here last W ednesday evening. T h e P ortlan d ers came
w ith a long strin g of victories to th eir credit and the
d eterm ination of adding our scalp to th eir collection,
but the lig h tn in g -lik e passing and basket shooting e x
hibited by our hoopers so bew ildered th eir opponents
th a t th e first half ended 16 to 6 in our favor.
From the first tip-off till the last ou r varsity played
like big leaguers; th eir team w ork and passes were of
an A -l order, w hich kept the visitors baffled th ro u g h
out the en tire contest, though in the second period
th e visitors som ew hat recovered from the shock and
played a m ore even gam e, registering 14 points to our
19. m aking the final score 35 to 20 in o u r favor.
T h e basket shooting of D andro G eorge was most
superb. H e was a w hole team in him self, falling only
one point shy of m aking as m uch as the en tire P o rt
land team . B rendible, ou r m idget forw ard, playing
his second varsity gam e th is season, perform ed like a
veteran.
Joe Bettles, ex-C hem aw a basketball star and all-
aro u n d ath lete, now playing on the W ater F ro n t team ,
was held to two lone baskets by our guards, A bra
ham and P h in n ey , who by the w ay, played the m ost
effective defensive gam e we have seen th is season.
All in all, the team has m ade a very creditable
show ing this season as was rem arked by ou r S u p e rin
ten d en t at th e banquet given by M r. and M rs. H all
in honor of the boys’ and g irls ’ basketball team s last
T h u rsd ay evening. T hey won half of the 14 gam es
played, lost three by tw o-point m argins and four to
team s of cham pionship caliber by com parativelv small
scores. O ur team was composed of first year men
and to DePoe, center; G eorge, B uchert, B rendible,
and N orw est forw ards; A braham , P hin n ey and A tk in s,
guards; our hats are off.
Before we go to press again Mrs. Brewer will have
d eparted from Chem aw a to go in to business for herself
in the Y akim a (W a s h .) co u n try . N o-one ever at the
school left w ith a better record th an M rs. Brew er;
not one ever gave as prolonged and faithful and u n
g ru d g in g service; she has been w ith Chem aw a since
th e begin n in g of the school, more than 40 years ago;
here she raised h er ch ild ren , saw them grow up and
dep art from her roof; here she gave of her best to all;
not one who appealed to her, in all these years was
denied. H ers is a record th a t few can hope to d u p li
cate. C hem aw a will miss her, b u t cannot replace her.
T he good w ishes of all will follow M rs. Brew er to her
new environm ent and rem ain th ere w ith her.
Chapel exercises last S u n d ay ev ening were in every
way m ost in terestin g . T h e o rchestra played “ A Dream
of S p rin g ” by F lath , A aron Isaac san g “ Till the Sands
of the D esert G row C old” by Ball, F ra n k Johnson re
cited “ T h e H ouse by the Side of th e R o a d ,” the choir
san g an a n th e m — “ Sing U nto G o d ” —by N olte, and
S u p t. H all gave a fine talk in c lo sin g . Mr. H all chose
to speak on the value and th e im portance of o n e’s
associates, illu stratin g in an able m anner the pow er of
o n e ’s “ c h u m ” to raise or lower him in a social and
m oral w ay. H e drew atten tio n to th e w ell-know n
fact th at “ birds of a feather flock to g e th e r.” It was
a fine and serious talk he gave and the atten tio n given
him was such th a t we are assure 1 the lesson was taken
to h eart.
Rev. E dw ard M arsden, P resb y terian m issionary from
M etlakatla, A laska, visited our school last week and
w hile here addressed the en tire stu d e n t body assembled
in the au d ito riu m . H e m ade a good talk in w hich he
cited th e need of his people of the north for education
and th e ir desire for it. W hile here he m et m any of
his y o ung friends whom he knew in A laska. S u p t.
H all personally escorted Mr. M arsden on a to u r th ro u g h
th e various vocational d ep artm en ts of the school and
exp lain ed to him th e achievem ents and the aims and
hopes of Chem aw a. It is seven or eig h t years since
R ev. M r. M arsden visited C hem aw a and he noted
m any changes in o u r in stitu te —all show ing a progess-
iv e a n d upw ard tendency. O ur visitor is en ro u te for

T h e Y .W .C .A . room was filled S u n d ay afternoon
w ith a large g ro u p of girls who listened to a splendid
talk bv Miss K atherine E arlo u g h er, librarian. Miss
E arlo u g h er spoke on the developm ent of self-respect,
and urged the girls to hold sacred m any th in g s of life,’
am ong w hich she enum erated honor, honesty, fidelity
and love. P receeding the talk, Lucy V ernev and
T en n ie F ra n k sang a duet, and F lora D exter played a
violin solo. Rose Seeds was leader for the afternoon.
T h e Y. M. C. A. M ission S tudy class, w hich has
been m eeting for the past eight w eeks u n d er th e able
leadership of Mr. Floyd R eynolds, held its last m eet
in g T uesday n ig h t of th is w eek. T h is has been one
of the m ost successful classes ever conducted in the
Y .M . C. A , and the last m eeting was celebrated by
a “ feed ” in the Y . M. C. A. room , a sh o rt, in te re st
in g program , and a discussion of th e last ch ap ter of
“ India on the M a rc h .” Mrs. R eynolds, Miss Judd
and Miss E ak in were guests of the classes for this
m eeting. T h e bovs hope th a t M r. R eynolds, w ho is
a stu d e n t at W . U ., m ay be able to lead th eir class
again n ex t year.
